Who would you consider the top players over each of the last several decades. I think some of them are obvious, or at least the people I've listed would be in strong consideration, but I'm stumped for the decade of 2000-2009.

1940's - Rocket Richard
1950's - Gordie Howe
1960's - Bobby Hull
1970's - Bobby Orr
1980's - Wayne Gretzky
1990's - Mario Lemieux
2000's - ??

No real standouts come to mind. My finalists for 2000's would include: Jarome Iginla, Martin St. Louis, Peter Forsberg, Niklas Lidstrom.

Who are your finalists/winners?

Forgot about Brodeur. Yes, should definitely include him. And I actually meant to type Joe Thornton, not Peter Forsberg.

Looks like you are only including non-goalies, otherwise it would have been an easy Marty Brodeur.

I guess Lidstrom . . . but you're right, no clear front runners.

Would include Ovechkin and Crosby, even though both only appear in the second half of the decade. They are the only 2 generational talents of that time that are in their prime, really.
