I don't know if it's bad luck, karma, fate, or what it is, but I will say, like Pasty warned, it's totally unconfirmed (the rumour)!!! I heard it from a caller to the local radio station, no idea where he heard it, but again, at this point it's totally unsubstantiated. It would make some sense though, wouldn't it?

Oh wow!

Alex, I had not heard that. That IS interesting...

And, exactly. Why would you trade a player on your top line who is showing signs of having a career year on a team that has so far gone 11-1 and was in the conversation for the "best line in the NHL"?

Hooking up with another player's gf would be a reason for that. LOL.

Well interesting. And now, Downie gets a concussion in his first game with Philly. Is that... Is that Karma? Or... Bad Luck? Or is it Karma????

Now to state this is 100% a rumour supported by 0 fact only a series of events,

the word is that Downie was involved with Varlomov`s girlfriend, hence the issues with Varlomov and how quick Colorado was to ship out a player who was producing on their top line for an inferior return,

All speculation aside, we all know Downie was not a well-liked guy at all . . . a dirty player, for sure . . . but he had skill, and could put the puck in the net. On paper, he's a bigger asset than Talbot, hands down.

But Colorado is also very full up with top 6 forwards; and Talbot was a guy they wanted a long time to fill a more traditional third line role; and he's a top PK guy, always a valuable asset.

On paper, it's a win for Philly; but thinking big picture, it might be pretty close, sort of a win-win situation, especially if there are more "behind the scenes" issue with Downie we don't know about.

Certainly wouldn't argue that he's the least valuable of that line and was most "disposable", but that doesn't explain moving him. There still has to be a reason they wanted to move him be it an off ice issue, contract/money, etc. The Av's certainly weren't in need of a shakeup??? Why mess with something that is working???

My opinion of Downie has nothing to do with how he is on his line or stats, its a personal thing. He has done some bad plays in the NHL and the have been a few people on the IR because of how he plays. That and the fact that Talbot is a PK specialist with a smaller cap hit. I think Downie of the Duchene, O'Reilly line was the most disposable and his stats were a result of his linemates, more than what he brought to the line.

Crock, looks like you and i aren't destined to disagree! I think Philly wins this trade. Why in the world would Colorado make this deal with the way not only the team has been playing, but it's top line? Duchene, O'Reilly and Downie have formed a really good line, which in fact was mentioned last night duing the Canucks telecast while "the panel" discussed which current NHL line is best? FTR, that line wasn't one of the choices thrown out there, but one guy did mention it would prob be his pick!

Downie is not liked around the league, much like Matt Cooke and other agitator types, but he was very effective this season so far. The money apparently is a little less on Talbot's deal but could that play a major role???

Rumours will surely fly that there's more to this than is being let on. For example, a called phoned in today to the TEAM 1040 and said he thinks that Downie hooked up with Varlamov's woman, leading to Varly laying a beat down on her so the team decided to ship Downie out. Lol. That didn't take long!
CrockOShight Posted - 10/31/2013 : 12:43:57
That seems about right.

I guess we are destined to disagree with everything. LOL.

Downie is exactly the spark the Flyers are looking for. Hard-nosed, nails, can put the puck in the net.

Talbot it great - but I don't get this trade for the Avalanche. Why would you change up a 10-1 lineup? Especially the way Downie was playing on the Top Line??
JOSHUACANADA Posted - 10/31/2013 : 12:35:01
Dislike Downie, don't dislike Talbot, so for me this was a 100% win for Colorado.
