About the Canadian teams though I'm not sure I agree. To clarify, I agree about media hype. That has to be Toronto.
However, as someone who grew up in Vancouver (rabid Canucks fan), spent 6 years in Montreal during late 90's early 2000's and the last 5 years in Toronto I'm not sure the fan base is stronger for Montreal.
Going to a game in Montreal is a great fan experience. Much more passion than a game in TO. I'll give you that.
But these Leaf fans just don't give up. They haven't won in 40 years. They can't stand current management. They feel the OTPP has ruined the team and it's ability to compete. They hate Kerry Fraser with a passion to this day for a non-call on Gretzky 15 years ago. TO fans love the IDEA of the Leafs so much that they forgive the actuality of the Leafs.
That's fan base.
Now if only I can convince them to trade Sundin to the Canucks.
