Posted - 12/07/2009 : 12:23:47 Yep it's early, but with some teams tanking the talks of who is a pending free agent, and therefore may be movable before the deadline is heating up. Some big names have already signed, Savard, Pronger, Luongo and Nash all signed extensions here is whats left, who do you think will stay and who do you think will find a new home?
Noteable UFA's: Sergei Gonchar Niklas Lidstrom Alexander Frolov Ollie Jokkinen Ilya Kovalchuck Paul Karyia Patrick Marleau Stephane Robidas Scott Neidermayer Teemu Selanne Rob Blake Jere Lehtinen Alex Tanguay Chris Higgins Bill Guerin Rene Bourque Maxim Afineganov Marty Turco Evgeni Nabokov J.S. Posted - 12/07/2009 : 12:46:21 Lidstrom, Selanne, Niedermayer, and Lehtinen will likely retire. I could see guys like Gonchar, Turco, Guerin, Kariya and Blake only resigning with their current teams for another short term.
I'm not really going to talk about Bourque, Afinogenov, Raycroft, Higgins, and Theodore as I believe there won't be any fighting over these guys, they will sign where they can get a job. Bourque and Afinogenov likely with their current teams for decent 09-10 performances.
I think realistically that leaves these guys as the heavier hitters:
Kovalchuk Marleau Jokinen Tanguay Frolov Robidas Nabokov
Of these guys I bet Robidas and Nabokov will sign with Dal and SJ respectively.
Jokinen, Tanguay and Frolov are all pieces that teams will fight over but not want to overpay due to their inconsistent histories. They could end up anywhere and I think will not be on the same teams next year as they are this year.
Kovalchuk and Marleau... those are tough. Those are the names that will fill the media's late june programming if they're not already signed to Atl and SJ... Or for Kovalchuk to wherever they trade him to at the deadline this year.
Giguere and Toskala could be interesting pieces as well on a team looking to take a chance, expect both to be somewhere new next year, Toskala as a backup or in the KHL.
I also think 95% of the RFAs will sign to their current teams or be traded and then signed.

Lidstrom, Kariya, Neids, Selanne, and Blake in particular. |
