Raleigh, NC, United States (4E Sports) - Carolina Hurricanes captain Eric Staal expects to begin training camp without an extension entering the final year of his contract.

Staal said Monday he hasn't given the extension "a ton of thought" at the moment as his focus is on training.

The 30-year-old Staal will make $9.5 million at a salary-cap charge of $8.25 million in the final season of a seven-year, $57.7 million.

Last season, Staal led Carolina with 54 points (23 goals, 31 assists) in 77 games.

Staal completed 11 seasons with the Hurricanes with 312 goals and 742 points in 846 games.

He helped the Hurricanes win the Stanley Cup in 2006.

Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis noted that Staal  indicated his desire to remain with the team.
