El Segundo, CA, United States (4E Sports) - Center Mike Richards have been demoted by the Los Angeles Kings to playing for Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League, Tuesday.

Once one of NHL's top two-way centers, Richards has been relegated to playing third or fourth-line center over the past two seasons.

Richards, 29, has only five goals and 10 assists in 47 games with Los Angeles this season. He has a minus-7 rating and has won 48 percent of his faceoffs .

His annual NHL salary-cap charge of $5.75 million coupled with his subpar performance discouraged other teams from picking him up.

"We don't win the first Cup without this guy," said Kings general manager Dean Lombardi. "He set a tempo. There's still time here. I'm hoping that he's got to do what he's got to do to get going."

A former Philadelphia Flyers captain and Selke Trophy runner-up, Richards won the Stanley Cup with the Kings in 2012 and 2014.

He has five full seasons remaining on a 12-year contract extension he signed with the Flyers in 2007.
