Oilers interview ex-Sharks coach Todd McLellan for coaching job

Edmonton, AB, Canada (4E Sports) - The Edmonton Oilers have interviewed former San Jose Sharks coach Todd McLellan for the vacant coaching job.

McLellan confirmed that he has met with Oilers general manager Peter Chiarelli during the 2015 IIHF World Championship in the Czech Republic, where he's coaching Canada.

Chiarelli also met with Oilers players taking part in the tournament and has since traveled to Arizona for the scouting meetings.

Though refusing to discuss how the interview went, McLellan said in general terms that Edmonton would be a desirable location for any coach.

"Edmonton has always been an interesting spot for many people, I think," McLellan said. "It's a team with a rich history and they have some good players there. Now you add in [potential No. 1 2015 NHL Draft pick Connor] McDavid , Bob [Nicholson, Oilers CEO] taking over and Peter coming in."

"I really do think there were good people there before. What job descriptions they end up in I'm not sure. But there will be a very strong team and group of people there," he added.

McLellan and the Sharks mutually parted ways April 20. In seven seasons he went 311-163-66, led the Sharks into the Stanley Cup Playoffs in his first six seasons, and reached the Western Conference Final in 2010 and 2011.

However, the Sharks finished with 89 points this season, 10 points behind the Winnipeg Jets for the second wild card into the playoffs from the West.

Chiarelli , who was hired April 24, has not committed to bringing back interim coach Todd Nelson, who took over last season after Dallas Eakins was fired Dec. 15.
