Washington, DC, United States (4E Sports) - Defenseman Matt Niskanen scored the game-winning goal in the third period to lift the Washington Capitals to a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers Sunday at Verizon Center.

Niskanen broke a 2-2 tie with an unassisted goal at 5:24 of the third while netminder Braden Holtby protected the lead with several key stops as the Capitals improved to 38-9-4, first in the Metropolitan Division, after winning their last three games.

Alex Ovechkin and Dmitry Orlov also scored while Holtby stopped 33 shots for the Capitals, who lead the New York Rangers in the division by 17 points.

Michael Del Zotto and Nick Schultz scored while Steve Mason had 27 saves for the Flyers, who slipped to 23-19-9 following two straight losses.

Del Zotto put the Flyers ahead with his fourth goal of the season at 18:21 of the first period but Ovechkin answered with his 30th goal of the season in the second period.

Orlov tallied his fifth goal of the season at 17:05 of the second to put the Capitals ahead but Schultz's first goal tied the count for the Flyers.
