Vancouver, BC, Canada (4E Sports) - The Vancouver Canucks have extended defenseman Chris Tanev for five years at $22.25 million.

Tanev , 25, has recorded 16 points (2-14-16) and 10 penalty minutes in his sixth season with the Canucks.

His 153 blocked shots this season is number one in the team and 13th in the NHL.

"He's the goalie's best friend," goaltender Eddie Lack said. "He is reading the play so well and blocking shots."

Canucks general manager Jim Benning described the 6-foot-2, 185 pound Tanev as a player they want on ice in the most critical points of a game.
