Boston, MA, United States (4E Sports) - Boston Bruins defenseman Matt Bartkowski was ejected Sunday in their 4-3 win against the Buffalo Sabres after a late hit to Sabres captain Brian Gionta in the first period.

Gionta was unable to receive a pass and with the puck past him, Bartkowski checked him hard with a shoulder to the head.

Sabres left wing Marcus Foligno quickly dropped the gloves with Bartkowski while Gionta was still down on the ice.

Gionta was able to skate off the ice on his own and did not return to the game.

Bartkowksi was slapped with an interference major for the hit and a fighting major after his collision with Foligno .

He was given a game misconduct and was ejected because of the hit.

"We don't know if he's going to be in [Monday] or not, so we'll cross our fingers, hoping he's good," Sabres coach Ted Nolan said about Gionta after the game.

"The head hits are dangerous hits, so we'll let the league look at that and make the correct call," Nolan added.
