  4. Do I want to do a Straight Pool or Draft Pool? PickupHockey.com offers 2 pool types. A Straight Pool - A basic hockey pool is one where any team can choose any NHL player regardless of whether that NHL player has been picked by another team. For example: if Bill's team chose Jaromir Jagr, then Jaromir Jagr CAN STILL be chosen by Ted's team as well as all of the other teams within your pool. Draft Pool - This is slightly different, in that, once an NHL player has been picked by one pool team, other pool teams can no longer select that NHL player. For example: if Bill's team chose Jaromir Jagr, Jaromir Jagr CANNOT be chosen by Ted's team nor any other team within your pool. Typically Draft style pools involve a little more organization and a gathering of pool people so the draft can be held.

  5. Can I customize my pool's start and end dates? Yes you can. By default the pool runs from the first game of the season to the last game of the season however you can insert custom start and end dates if you prefer. So your pool can start and end whenever you like.

  6. What is considered a full "Season"? A season is either the regular NHL Season or the Playoff Season. The regular season begins in October and ends in April. The Playoff season begins in April and ends in June.

  11. Can I make trades? You can make replacement trades or split trades.
  12. What is the difference between a Replacement Trade and a Split Trade? Replacement Trades is the standard trades function. What this means is that when you trade a player for a new player you are also trading all of his points in return for the new players points. You simply trade a player away and his points get traded with him. You then acquire all the points of the new player from the start of your pool. This is the default trade setting. In a Split Trade your team will keep the points of the traded player up to the trade deadline and then begin acquiring the points of the newly acquired player after the trade deadline. Multiple splits are available too. So you could trade Player A at the first trade date and then trade him for Player B at the next trade date and then trade B for Player C and so on. The system will track all the trade dates and the points accordingly. You will be able to continuously view the points that each player has gotten your team up to the point they were traded.

  13. How many trade dates can I have in my pool? Unlimited!

  14. What is a Bias Rule? The Bias Rule is commonly used to take the "luck" out of a hockey pool. Here you can select how many NHL players to ignore in the pool's point count. For example: If you enter 2 into the Top field, the system will ignore the points accumulated by the top 2 players in each team of your pool. If you enter 2 into the Bottom field then the system will negate the points accumulated by the bottom 2 players for all the teams in your pool. You can also control this positionally.

C. Administrative

  1. Why do I need to supply my email address? We value your privacy and the need for your email is NOT for spam. We will send you an activation email to confirm that the pool set up is legitimate. You must click on the link in this email to activate your pool. If you do not then no one else can view the pool. In addition if we receive support emails requesting changes to a pool we will use the email address as part of the verification process. Also in the rare case that we need to contact the administrators we can do so via email.
  2. After I've created my pool now how do I login? To log in just go to the "Hockey Pools" section of the site and use the "Login to Hockey Pool" login fields at the left side of the screen. Use your pool name and admin password if you would like to edit your pool and have everyone else use the general password.
  3. I've lost my password, how do I retrieve it? In the "Hockey Pools" section of the site underneath the hockey pool login fields is a text link that says "Forget Login Information?" Just click on that. You will be taken to a screen where you must supply your email address. If that email matches the one used in your pool ID then your pool login info will be mailed to that address. This is another reason it is so important to input your correct email address. Please note that it will send you one email with all the login info associated with that email address, so if you have 5 pools running it will send you all 5 logins.
  4. As the administrator I can log into my pool but why can't my fellow poolies log into the pool? It is probably because you have not activated your pool yet. We will send you an activation email right after you set up your pool ID. You must click on the link in this email to activate the email. If you do not then no one else can view the pool.
  5. Can I give out my administrator password for my pool? We highly recommend not doing so. Remember the system is set up so that the administrator of the pool edits everything in the pool. They are the keeper of the pool. We would recommend that you don't give out the admin password to your poolmates because they can accidentally mess up your pool settings or even worse...cheat. With that in mind we also recommend that the person selected to manage the pool is very trustworthy.
  6. Will PickupHockey moderate pool disputes? PickupHockey.com WILL NOT moderate pool disputes. If you feel that your pool's administrator has cheated you must resolve it from within your pool group. PERIOD!

D. Troubleshooting

  1. How do I contact my pool administrator for my hockey pool? After logging in, general users can contact their pool administrators by clicking on the "Email Your Pool Admin" button on the "View Pool" page.
  2. We receive an error message when general users try to log in to our pool saying that I must activate my pool. How do I activate my pool? We will send you an activation email immediately after you finish setting up your pool ID. You must click on the link in this email to activate your pool. If you do not then no one else can view the pool. If you do not activate your pool within 21 days of setting up your pool ID then the system will automatically remove the pool from the database.
  3. Why didn't I receive my pool activation email? If you did not receive your pool activation email it is likely because you mistyped your email address in the Pool ID. Log in as the administrator and click on "Edit Pool" from the left menu. Then click on "Edit Pool ID" from the right menu. Please confirm that the email address is correct. If it is correct then it is possible that your firewall/email filters may have blocked the email. To have your activation email re-sent log in as the administrator and click on "Edit Pool" from the left menu. Then click on "Edit Pool ID" from the right menu. At the top of the page you will see the link to re-send the activation email. If all else fails, please contact support@pickuphockey.com and the pool will be activated within 24hrs.
  4. I have just setup up my pool. Why are the points are not showing up for the pool teams? The PickupHockey.com pool system calculates stats once a day at 12:30 am PST/4:00 am EST. Your pool will be tallied up at that time. So your stats will first appear the day after you set it up.
  5. I have just edited my pool settings and the points all went to zero, what's wrong? Nothing is wrong. This is normal. It indicates that you have made a change to the pool details. When the system refreshes at 12:30am PST/4:00am EST then the points will reappear. Anytime you edit a team or the stats the points will zero out accordingly until the next refresh.
  6. What do I do if I see an error in the stats or a problem with my pool? Please contact your Pool Administrator (the person who organized your specific pool) and report the problem. They may have an explanation as to why the stats are like that. (It may not be a problem at all as it may be the way the pool is set up) If they agree that there is a problem then they should contact us at support@pickuphockey.com
