Did TSN really mention that Letang said he would consider the Leafs if he and The Pens can't come to an agreement?
Although his preference is with Pens and if the Leafs are interested, so is he!!!!!!
Please say it ain't so!

Yes, that is what TSN reported..... that Letang would play for Toronto if things can't get worked out in Pittsburgh. I think it was reported in a newspaper, but I'm not sure which one.

That'd be a huge grab for the Leafs and it might just make Gardiner available with Reilly likely to be on the big club soon? Gardiner could then be used as bait for more scoring up front. However, isn't Letang signed for another season yet at 3.5? Pittsburgh is gonna ask for something significant in return.

I would wager the Leafs would be Asking for at least Gardiner or Reilly, a solid prospect (winger most likely) and a 1rst round pick.

And then the Leaf's would have to get Letang under contract for the long term to make it worth giving up so much, and apparently he has already refused 5 years 6 million wanting at least 7 million a year,,,

the Leafs might be better off letting Reilly and Gardiner develop into what they could be and they may have 2 almost as good (or better) d men for the same money as Letang is getting.... just a thought....

No. No. This is the Leafs remember. The team with the best player wins the trade. It is an old adage as true as fantasy hockey is a reflection of a player's worth in a real game. So instead of using up space for two good players at a reduced cap hit, you pay one guy huge money and surround him with mediocrity.

Ooops. Wrong thread I think. Waiting for Crock or Duke to defend this fantasy trade also.

what's Letang like on the defensive side of the ice? because that's where the Leafs need the upgrade.

TSN, might as well be Toronto Sporting News, as every big fish is reported as wanting to play there, but Letang is great offensively, par defensively. I remember him in this years post season and was thinking, why is this guy so highly rated and its all because of his ppg. He isn't big and tough like Chara/Weber, isn't super fast like Karlson, has the stats he has based on the play of the remainder of the powerplay he plays with. He had 9 of his 16 points playing on a supertalented powerplayin the playoffs and 13 of his 38 points in the regular season, but wont see that level of talent in Toronto. Shero see's this and isn't willing to overpay.

Gardiner plus a 1st or 2nd round draft pick might be equal value, but any more than that is an overpayment, especially since he is coming into a contract year. Gardiner has a good upside, but hasn't been given the opportunity yet and if playing with the talent in Pitts, might do well, while they benefit from the lower cap hit/draft pick.

Wouldn't it be better to fit Gardiner in the lineup by moving another defenseman and giving him a full season to develop. He had good stats in 2011/12, his first run with the leafs and didn't see much action last year. This post season he had 5 points in 6 games. To me this is the Leafs not willing to develop there own talent and looking for a quick fix when they have good pieces in house now.

Let's get this straight. This is not the Leafs saying they are interested, this is Letang maybe interested of joining the Leafs if Pittsburgh can't fit him in the budget.

Letang still has a season left, Pittsburgh might want to keep him for another year to try to win the cup. If they can't sign him by then, Toronto should go after him as a UFA.

I say they stay away from this trade right now that would involve a prospect, a player and a 1st or second rounder. No way Nonis makes this trade. The season is long and many things can happen before next summer when Letang's contract is up.

I think it was more TSN reportedly always throwing Gardiner in the mix when proposing a trade and every good player seeming to want to play in Toronto, based on there reports.

I for one would like Toronto to continue the path that led them to the Postseason last year and that was to continue to develop in house and only make smart trades. I didn't hate the Leafs last year, as with years prior, when reportedly every big star was coming to Toronto. A coach survived a whole season in Toronto and they made huge leaps in almost all areas without a big free agent signing.

Lets get this even straighter. In a conversation with a Toronto-based news agency, a Pittsburg-based reporter that covers the Penguins but is not part of the Penguins organization suggested that Letang might be interested in going to Toronto, if a deal cannot be worked out with PIT.

Of course this was widely broadcast by TSN, and now Leaf nation has proclaimed it a done deal and offered up a myriad of packages in return (some realistic some not).

Some actual facts:

- Letang is still under contract with PIT for the coming season
- PIT will almost certainly try to sign him to a long term deal, although they are definitely handcuffed financially, and may not be able to meet his asking price (reports indicate he starts getting interested at 7M a season).
- Letang, despite his defensive issues , is one of the premier offensive defensemen and PP specialists in the NHL. That is a rare talent in the NHL, and he will be sought after by 29 other teams in the NHL.

Players of that calibre don't often get to UFA status - normally teams that have rights will move heaven and earth to sign them. I expect it will be no different for Letang and whatever team holds his rights next season. TOR might certainly be in the mix to land him - they need that sort of defenseman as much as any other team - but I can't imagine it being particularly cheap for them to acquire him, both in terms of trade value and contract after the fact.

Let's get one more thing straight:

Letang's agent openly stated that things with Pitt are not going as well as they would like but at no time have they thought about the Leafs or any other team. They are committed to Pittsburgh and want that deal to be made.

I also don't think this move is right for the Leafs unless the unload Phaneuf. If Letang is looking for $7 million a don't think any team could handle a $13 million top pairing. It's just too much money. I also wouldn't give up Gardiner for almost anything. That guy has multiple Norris trophies written all over him. Even though I think Letang is a top 10 defenseman in the league, I don't see his peak potential being as his as Gardiner's.

Unless the Leafs can steal a deal, I don't think this moves makes them better.

Ottawa, the best coached team in the NHL, with MVP like players such as Chris Neil, will win the Cup in 2013!

Well we agree.

Pittsburgh are obviously the front runner for the contract and it would not be in the Leafs best interest to trade away Gardiner, a prospect a draft pick and then sign Letang for 7 million.

For that matter I say Nonis will stay away, unless, of course, an absolute steal comes along. like Phaneuf for Letang, straight up

I'm not sure that is the outright steal that you think it is...

regardless, PIT cannot afford a 6.5M cap hit on the blueline this season, so its a moot point until next year's trade deadline.

Really? "Multiple Norris trophies"? I know there's talk that this kid is gonna be awesome and i'll admit, i've not seen much of him for have i followed his career to this point, but was he a late bloomer or something? If he always had this potential i'm hearing about, then Brian Burke should NEVER again have to listen to ANYTHING regarding the Kessel deal as Lupul and Gardiner AND a pick for F. Beauchemin has to be the most lopsided deal ever!!!

Jake Gardiner has yet to accomplish what Dougie Hamilton has. However, he may turn out to be the next Jared Knight.

Letang has reportedly turned down an 8yr/56M deal from PIT - which works out to an even 7M a season. Apparently is looking for a long term deal worth north of 7.5M per season.

It sounds like PIT is not going to pay that much...so looking for Letang to get moved at some point soon.

The question I have is, who WILL pay him 7.5M a year for 8 years? Even for an offensively gifted defenseman, that is a steep price.

I agree, that's a lot of money for a dman who's best asset is his offense. Not to mention, just how good would this guy be on a less offensively balanced team with a PP that sports guys like Crosby and Malkin??? Sure, he's a big piece of that PP, but i'd venture to guess that he's more replaceable than the aforementioned 2 all world forwards!

Take Letang off that PP and replace him with, for example, Kevin Shattenkirk. Now take Crosby or Malkin off and replace with Patrick Sharp. Which PP is better?

I can't believe a guy like that would hold out for .5M/yr (total of 4M over the 8 year contract that sees him get 56M!!!) and risk being moved off of the most offensive team in the league??? So much for a home town discount.

IF this is true and confirmed, i wouldn't want anything to do with a guy like that.

Why would the leafs want to give up on Gardiner to obtain Letang ??

Gardiner .....a 1st rd pick....and a solid prospect for Letang ??......are you F..ing kidding me...lmao....

I wouldn`t trade Gardiner straight up for Letang....he is not that good. Plus Gardiner brings the same type of game at a much cheaper price.....leafs need a 1st line shut-down D-man most.

Now Gardiner, a 1st rd pick and a solid prospect........for a 25 year old proven # 1st line center.....that would make sense.

I would l;ove for the leafs to have Letang, don`t get me wrong....but not give up on Gardiner yet.

Only way i`d make a trade for Letang ( if i were GM ) is if Dion Phaneuf were going the other way.....if this were not possible...no way , no deal. Dion`s contract would have to go to Pitt`s for this to work.

heh Oil.....what do you mean by...J. Gardiner has yet to accomplish what D. Hamiliton has ?? what are you talking about ??

The only thing i`ve seen Hamiliton accomplish, achieve ( so far ) in the playoffs anyway.....was....getting plucked out of the starting 6.

What? Toronto would hands down have the best player in the trade. Wouldn't that make them a winner in the trade?

If I was playing fantasy hockey I'd take Letang over Gardner all day and everyday too.

In addition I free up two roster spots for Letang who is a superstar, top 3 defensemen in the league (don't ya know). Instead I fill up two spots with prospects that may turn out to be OK players but not the young superstar that is Letang.

Did I mention that Letang is a fantasy hockey god. Top 3 defensemen in the entire league and 2 time Norris nominated defensemen? Why aren't you trading picks and prospects for this guy?

You see guest, when the leafs traded for kessel, they needed a kessel type player....they didn't have one . Letang is different, leafs have offensive d men, phaneuf, franson , Gardner , and Reilly in the ahl. As much as the leafs or any team could use letang, what he offers is not on the leafs priority list right now.....bringing letang to the leafs would only be advantageous if phaneufs cap hit moved to Pitts ...............do you really think letang is top 3 in the league ?....he is good, but top 3 ?... ......what about chara ? Doughty ? Weber ? R. Suter ? D . Keith ? .....I would take any of those 5 over letang............ Subban ? Yandle ? M. Staal ? Seabrook ?......all great d- men also.....not sure where letang would rank, it's hard to judge him because he has always been on a top notch NHL team.......not sure if I agree with you on the fact that the leafs get the best player here...hands down....I've seen Gardner totally dominate the on ice play for several mins at a time....this player is the real deal , no doubt about it...and still just a kid

Letang was a finalist for the Norris. This obviously makes him top 3 best defensemen in the league. Right?

You telling me Letang is not a better defensemen than any of your Leafs? Really? What did any Leafs defencemen do in the last 3 years? Were any of them finalists for the Norris 2 years straight. That makes him the top 3 defencemen in the league 2 years running. You are going to argue against very knowledgeable hockey people (you know the GMs and scouts...) about that?

What has Jake Gardner done in the NHL? Nothing. Letang has a cup and was finalist for the Norris 2 years going. And you think Gardner is better than Letang?

Gardner is a kid and Letang at 26 is an old man with no room to improve.

Note most of the above should be read with massive sarcasm. I'll let you figure out which part should not be read sarcastically.

It sucks when you start arguing against yourself isn't it? These are almost the exact same arguments you use in the Kessel thread to prove that the Leafs won that trade.

The Leafs already had a young starting goalie, but they went out and got Bernier anyway. Teams are built with more than one of each type of asset.

Nonis has said that he would upgrade any position - as of today, Letang is a better offensive dman than anything else the Leafs have. The only concern that I would have with Letang is that his defensive game is not as good as others making 7M+ per season. If I was paying a dman 7M or more, I'd take Doughty, Weber, Chara over Letang any day because IMO they are the "complete package" defenseman.

But duke, lets not kid ourselves here - Letang would instantly become the best player on the Toronto blueline if they were to acquire him today. You can talk all you want about potential and promise, but Letang has fulfilled all of that today.

I still think this guy is an idiot and a greedy one at that, to not take the money to stay in Pittsburgh. I'm still shaking my head if he really did turn down a 56M 8 year deal in Pitty. I didn't think anyone would even give a guy like him an offer that high!!! If I were the Leafs, i'd have no interest tying up that much cap space for a dman like Letang!!!

Utterly horrified! I actually sit here hoping that it comes out that it was only a 40-45M offer.

Great post Alex. I agree with everything you said, 100 %......you don`t twist peoples words around to imply something they never said....your post is the truth.

Guest is kinda saying i said that all Toronto d-men are as good as or better than letang......i never said that....letang would instantly become TO`s best d-man if aquired, i know that , i`m not stupid.......but all i posted was.....Toronto does indeed have d-men who are quite capable of ful-filling the offensive role that letang brings, maybe not as good, but they can deliver.

The leafs needs are for more important things than another offensive d-man.......like a 1st line center and top defensive d-man.

This is diffrent than the kessel trade...kessel was an absolute need....letang, ( as great as he is ) is not an absolute need.

crazy. I honestly don't know what PIT is going to do. They're fine this year, but looking at 14/15, they have 8 players taking up nearly 45M, and 19M in cap space to sign 15 players. That's the majority of your team as hometown discounts or rookies.

Something is going to have to give in PIT next year. Or the cap is going to have to rise quite a bit.

Thats because he's a UFA, and cannot sign anywhere until July 5. Also, this is a Letang thread.

hahahaha

So did Letang in fact signed with Pittsburgh.

If so I am so glad, because I want the Leafs to stay away. too much money if he resign and to much to give away.

Letang is good, but to give away Gardiner and Phaneuf (can't keep both contracts) and then sign him for over seven millions would have been scary.
