Great little article from Pierre Lebrun at ESPN.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/columns/story?columnist=lebrun_pierre&id=5918807

"Perfect human on and off the ice."
"To the average fan, it's not always obvious just why Lidstrom is considered the greatest defenseman of his generation."
"He doesn't dangle. The wow factor is, he does it every day, day after day after day, after game, after year."
"During Mike Babcock's first season behind the Wings' bench in 2005-06, he said he had to wait until 50-odd games into the season before Lidstrom finally made a blunder during a drill at practice. "
"But he sure puts numbers up," said Orr. "He does it differently than the way I did with the end-to-end [play]. ..."
"He's not flashy, and in some ways maybe he frustrates you because of that," Niedermayer told ESPN.com. "He doesn't use his physical strength to shut you down, or his speed, or things like that that really stand out -- but you're just shut down by him. He's a very smart player."

Lidstrom is all class. Can be easily argued as #2 of all time behind Orr. Anyone willing to put him #1 over Orr.

No, but #2 in my opinion. How many D-men, total, were in the league when Harvey won all of his Norris Trophies?

Wow that is a long article
I skipped a bit of it but he seems like he thinks he is under the radar when he is really over the radar. Lindstrom however did not deserve to be a Norris nominee, and if he was this would be the Nominee's
Weber
Green
Lindstrom

and even if you remove Green from the Equation Weber still tops Lindstrom.

Ya I could put Lindstrom #2 of all time when he retires but I think Ray Borque was better. #3?

I suppose his hat trick tonight is fitting of this topic. The first of his career and oldest defenceman to ever get one.

I'd be his friend.

I don't understand, in what year would you take Weber over Nik Lid?

Bourque better than Lindstrom, every day of the week. But you gotta convince me why Bourqe is above Lidstrom. At 41 Bourque was #4 or 5 on the Avs when he won the cup. At 41 Lidstrom is still top 5 in the league. Ray Bourque is top 5 for sure but above Lidstrom, I need convincing. Yes RB has the most points for a defencemen, but a good chunk of that was during the live puck era.

I would say Bourque above Lidstrom, the only time where Weber is better is when Weber ripped the net

The post was based 100% on last year statistics. Weber played a slight bit better last year then Lindstrom, but once again Lindstrom is back on track.

I'm biased on this topic, as Ray Bourque is my all-time favorite player. The sole reason, I became a fan of the game of hockey.

I used to dislike watching a hockey game, as I found it boring. Until one day, I seen Ray Bourque play. The way he played, both ends of the ice as a d-man, memorized me.

So, I have Bourque as #1 All-Time. But, that's my favoritisim speaking.

In reality,

I have Orr at #1, with Bourque at #2.

If you disagree, fine. But to me, Bourque changed the game of hockey to me personally. Thus, making him valuable.

Mark Howe? He would really be 8th for you? Or is this another Shane O'Brien thing?

My list would have to be as follows

Orr
Harvey
Bourque
Potvin
Lidstrom
Coffey
Robinson
Park

Though I feel like mentioning, the HNIC book "best of the best"
ranks the top 10 players from each position in the Original six and Modern era, the original six list is
Harvey
Eddie Shore
Red Kelly
Tim Horton
Pierre Pilote
Harry Howell
Dit Clapper
Butch Bouchard
Bill Gadsby
Lionel Chonacher
the modern era list is
Orr
Lidstrom
Bourque
Potvin

(this book was published earlier this year)
