What a series. From start to finish it was full of twists and turns and it came down to the final few minutes of the third period of the seventh game, and in the end, the better team won. Give credit to the Edmonton Oilers – a team that no one (but me) predicted would go this far.

After game six, the Hurricanes looked as though they had given up and many predicted that Edmonton would be the first Canadian team since the 1993 Montreal Canadiens to drink from Lord Stanley’s Mug. But not since the 1942 Maple Leafs has a team come back from a 3-1 deficit in the finals.

Last night reminded me of the 1994 Stanley Cup finals where the Canucks had come back from being down 3 games to 1, only to lose in New York in a hard fought game seven. It is hard not to be happy for the team lifting the cup and watching them live out their dream. It is also hard not to feel for the ones who came so close only to have their dream taken away.

Although the cup will once again remain in the Unites States, it will make a number of trips up to the ‘Great White North’. Rod Brind’amour, Eric Staal, Cory Stillman, Justin Williams, Mark Recchi, Ray Whitney, Andrew Ladd, Aaron Ward, Mike Commodore, and Glen Wesley make up the Hurricanes’ Canadian content. 10 out of 21 players – not bad eh?

Unfortunately, the day after the cup is hoisted (today) is also the first day of a summer without hockey. Fortunately there are some things to look forward to and important dates to follow over the summer are:

June 24th – The NHL entry draft in Vancouver

July 1st – Free agency begins.

September 12th – Training camp begins

October 5th – 2006-07 season commences.

Well, that’s pretty much it. This off-season should be an exciting one with the cap in effect and a plethora of unrestricted free agents available. Stay tuned to PickupHockey.com for up to the minute news on the draft, trades, signings and more.
