Ex-Blackhawks defenseman Sheldon Brookbank looks to join Flames

Chicago, IL, United States (4E Sports) - The Chicago Blackhawks' cap space issues forced defenseman Sheldon Brookbank, an unrestricted free agent, to pursue a spot with the Calgary Flames.

The Blackhawks are currently over the NHL's cap space limit with a $2.2 million excess.

"The Hawks said that they liked me and they'd like to have me back if it worked but obviously they're a little strapped under the cap," Brookbank stated.

Because of the situation, he was not given a new deal and is pursuing a job with the Flames.

"As for now, I'm moving on and I'm going to Calgary and I'm going to try to make their team."

Brookbank also wanted to stay with the Blackhawks but the main priority is to play in the NHL.

"That is your goal first and foremost," he added.

The 33-year-old wants to give it another shot though he is aware of his age.

"I know my age is creeping up there but I feel I gained a lot of valuable experience in Chicago and it's something I want to try and take with me when I move on for my next opportunity," he stated.

Brookbank was a part of the Stanley Cup-winning squad in 2013.

He had had two goals, five assists and 52 penalty minutes in 48 games for the Blackhawks last year.
