Washington, DC, United States (4E Sports) - Washington Capitals left winger Alex Ovechkin has joined an elite group of players after recording his sixth 50-goal season in their 4-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes Tuesday.

Ovechkin has joined Wayne Gretzky , Mike Bossy, Mario Lemieux , Guy Lafleur and Marcel Dionne as the only players to tally a 50-goal season six or more times.

Gretzky and Bossy have nine 50-goal seasons while Lemieux , Lafleur and Dionne have six each.

"Every year, it's harder and harder," Ovechkin said. "But it's a huge accomplishment with those names up there. It's always nice. But every year you don't know what to expect from yourself, how you are going to play."

"I hadn't been around anybody who's ever scored 50 goals in this League, especially the way it's so hard to score goals in this League," Capitals coach Barry Trotz said.

"You know it's a part of history, a guy who scores 50 in this league right now the way the goal-scoring is. The goaltenders are so good in the National Hockey League," he added.

Earlier this season, Ovechkin became the fifth player in NHL history to score at least 30 goals in each of his first 10 seasons. The others are Gretzky, Bossy, Mike Gartner and Jari Kurri.

Ovechkin is also expected to lead the NHL in goals, something only four other players have done. That club includes Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull and Phil Esposito.

Ovechkin is also a strong contender to win the Hart Trophy for a fourth time in his career as well. Gretzky, Howe and Eddie Shore are the only other players with four or more League MVPs.
