Penguins part ways with veteran defenseman Sergei Gonchar

Pittsburgh, PA, United States (4E Sports) - Veteran defenseman Sergei Gonchar , who was signed to a tryout contract August, was released by the Pittsburgh Penguins Saturday.

Gonchar was drafted by the Washington Capitals in 1992 ( 14th overall) and along with playing for the team, also had stints with the Boston Bruins, Ottawa Senators, Dallas Stars and Montreal Canadiens .

The 41-year-old spent 20 years in the NHL scoring 811 points (220 goals, 591 assists) in 1301 regular season games.

In 2009, Gonchar was a part of the Penguins team that won the Stanley Cup.
