TSN ran a story regarding the best UFA signing from this past offseason, and I thought, good question! Who has been the best UFA, in regards to overall performance and impact to their respective team so far this year?

Makes sense, and does indeed prove his worth if he's out there even as the second option. Malhotra doesn't always take ours errr, the Canucks' (sorry Beans) but is almost always out there as well!

I will say, i had no idea his numbers were near that good and i can't argue them, except for the face off % one. I just looked on NHL.com and they have it like this:

Malhotra 2nd overall at 63.1% - 323 wins vs 189 losses
Halpern 13th overall at 56.2% - 181 wins vs 141 losses

Regardless, at the money they're at, you're absolutely correct that Halpern has been a great deal for the Habs. What i don't know, because i don't see enough Hab games is how often Halpern is out there when the game is on the line. Is he the one taking the key faceoffs with under a min left and a 1 goal lead? Malhotra is often on the ice at this time AND, even when we're down a goal, even though he's not known for his offense!
Looking at the total number of face offs they've taken, makes me believe that Halpern isn't taking those key ones but i could be wrong. The fact that Malhotra's taken almost 200 more draws has to be factored into the argument though, again, i will concede, the value the Habs are getting is very good!

Generally what Martin does is he puts Halpern and Plekanec out together in a key situation and i would say
Plekanec takes a few more draws than Halpern but the idea being if Plekanec gets thrown out of the circle our next best faceoff man is there, you are right Halpern comes after Plekanec for key draws but i think that is more about how good Plekanec is defensivly ,,

Jeff Halpren: Gp 30 G 6 A 10 P 16 +/- 11 GWG 3 faceoff percentage 60.7 % and 77.1% when shorthanded!

Manny Malhotra Gp 28 G 5 A 9 P 14 +/- 3 GWG 0 Faceoff percentage : 62.5 % and i couldn't find it short handed....

2.5 million for Malhotra , 600 000 for Halpren,,, no chance Malhotra is a better signing, think about it if the Canucks had signed Halpren instead of Malhotra it would have helped with the salary cap issue's no? and lets face it there is no way you can argue me that Malhotra is a better signing than Halpren for this year,, now in fairness Halpren will command a raise after this year and Malhotra is younger and will be around longer that is forsure but that is Malholtra's only advantage over Halpren is age!

What about Paul Martin? He hasn't produced huge offensive numbers, but has been great for Pittsburgh playing over 23 minutes per night.
nuxfan Posted - 12/13/2010 : 16:46:19
such was the crop of 2010 UFA signings - lots of second chances and role players, and few big names. The biggest name of the offseason, Kovalchuk, didn't warrant consideration.
Guest5806 Posted - 12/13/2010 : 15:18:59
those are all some pretty mediocre players. malhotra because of the faceoffs though
foolpittier Posted - 12/11/2010 : 06:09:30
clark macarther is really the only player making areal inpact on his team
nuxfan Posted - 12/11/2010 : 02:10:03
yeah, Gaborik last year is a good example. In fact, he might be one of the more successful UFA signings that I recall in a few years.
ryan93 Posted - 12/10/2010 : 19:34:15
nuxfan...you're right in that it doesn't happen a lot with unrestricted free agency. As a Rangers fan i'll throw Marian Gaborik's name out there. He may not have been in the running for the Hart last season, but he had a very strong season...76 games 42 goals 86 points.

Unfortunately as a Rangers fan i also know all to well that the big free agent signings don't always turn out that well...Gomez, Drury, Redden, Fleury, Kamensky, Holik, etc etc etc

None of them are having that sort of year, but none of them have been flops for their new teams either.

I didn't nescesarily mean MVP, but a good season, think 75-85 point year, I said MVP for lack of a better term

Manny Malhotra
He may not tally the points, but his ability on the Penalty kill is outstanding!
Morrison is my runner up because he costs absolutley nothing and works damn hard.
nuxfan Posted - 12/10/2010 : 16:29:47
Patsy - good point about Halpern, forgot to add him, and there is no more room in the list to do so.

Beans - MacArthur has been good for the Leafs, although I suspect its because he's getting first-line opportunities - I don't think he'd be seeing that kind of time with another team. But he's made the most of it to be sure.
Alex116 Posted - 12/10/2010 : 16:28:12
Ahhhhhh.....great pick Beans. Skimmed through so quick he didn't even register with me. Strong start, slowed slightly for a couple weeks but seems to be putting up points again. Def great value and well overachieving as far as expectations go!
Beans15 Posted - 12/10/2010 : 15:21:18
I would personally say Clark MacArthur. Hugely overachieving on the expectations the Leafs had of him coming in. He was signed to be a 3rd/4th line player who was not even assured a spot on the team and he has come in and played like a 1st line player(for the Leafs anyway). Take away his goals that Toronto loses another 3-4 games.

Huge impact on a bad team.
Alex116 Posted - 12/10/2010 : 15:19:18
Funny, we prob all sound like "homers" but i too picked Malhotra. BTW, the list is pretty bleak! He's not putting up a ton of points, but i marvel at his stats as far as faceoffs go! There's been games where the numbers are just crazy (win %). If you're ever watching a Canucks game late, he's almost always on the ice at the end when up or down a goal (any important faceoff really).

Pasty, Halpern is def earning his "small" salary! Always thought he'd have a breakout year offensively in Washington and it just never happened?

Runnerup would be Tanguay, though i wonder if he looks good because Jokinen has looked so bad???
Pasty7 Posted - 12/10/2010 : 14:57:33
uhh very simple and this isn't because i'm a habs fan, Jeff Halpren ,, 600 000 = 6 goals 9 assists o n pace for 43 points not to mention the habs have the number 1 penalty kill in the league and he is maybe their best penalty killer so him or Tanguay 1 000 000 = on pace for 68 points and second in team scoring!

This is a close one, none have really been having MVP type years, as some free agents sometimes do.

IM A CHAMPION!

for me, it is Manny Malhotra - he has been more than we could have hoped for in VAN this year, all the things we thought we'd get and some offensive capabilities as well.

Tanguay would be a close second as well, clearly having a resurgent year in Calgary after dissapointment in not-Calgary.
