NJ now are for the most part an aging team with average goaltending...average defense....and with Parise out, average offense....and this surely shows in the standings.
Let's not talk like it wasn't warranted to jump on you for those comments. Brodeur just came off a Vezina nomination campain including the 2nd most wins in his career, 2nd most starts, and right on pace in GAA and save %. It's not like he was coming down off an average year, he was one of the top 3 in the game last season.
People have been saying for 5 years that Brodeur's best years are behind him. They were all wrong. You may still be wrong now. Let's not forget that Brodeur has been fighting injuries virtually all year and he does not have near the defense with him he has had in the past.
The far bigger issue in NJ is scoring and cap flexability. I would venture to say there are at least 1/2 the NHL GM's that would be more than happy to take Brodeur into the playoffs this season.

Historically, when a team go fined draft picks it was for tampering with a player under contract. The last time I can find on this is when STL was found tampering with Scott Stevens while under contract. The Devils got $1.43 million, a 1st round pick, and the option to trade their 1st round pick for STL's. STL could say no to the trade once only in a 4 year period of time.
Very rare.
hey beans where did you find the story about the stevens tampering case ,, i would sure like to read it..

Here are a couple.

http://www.nytimes.com/1999/01/05/sports/hockey-devils-get-1.4-million-and-draft-pick-in-tampering-case.html
There is also a little something on it in Stevens Wikipedia page. Here that is:
After the 1993–94 season, Stevens was a potential free agent. Officials from the St. Louis Blues discussed a return to the team with him, and persuaded him to sign an offer sheet worth $17 million over four years on July 4, 1994. Five days later, the Devils matched the offer, and thus Stevens remained in New Jersey. However, the Devils later found out that Stevens had heard from St. Louis management before the free agency period began, which was illegal under NHL policy. After a five-year investigation, the league fined the Blues $1.5 million USD, and awarded the Devils two St. Louis first-round draft picks. Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello felt the punishment was not enough; he wanted five first-round draft picks plus damages. Despite the investigation, there was no evidence that Stevens was aware of any wrongdoing. |

New Jersey should trade coaches with Toronto, New Jersey has a defense based coach now, Toronto has the Offense based coach.

Posted - 12/23/2010 : 13:45:48 NJ does not lose next year's pick, they lose one first round pick, of the Devils choosing, in the next 4 years. If ATL owns their pick for 2011, then they have no say in that (I would guess), and will have to forfeit one in the following 3 years.
I could not find any data on this on the web, I don't recall a team having a draft pick taken away from them before? My guess would be that NJ simply will not pick in the first round when they forfeit their pick. There will be 29 first round picks instead of 30. |

Q: if the NHL owns the pick, then what happens to it? Do they just toss it out the door and only have 29 picks in that specific round? |

Posted - 12/23/2010 : 08:03:55 2nd coach getting fired. The dude in Long Island was fired first this year.
Lamoriello's experiment of changing the Devils MO from a defensive team to an offensive team obviously failed. Lemaire will bring back their defensive first system. I also think that Kovalchuk will improve his performance.

Write off season, Devils will be back next year. |
