Posted - 12/30/2010 : 18:09:48 Can you believe it? Shane Doan has not yet, and i hope it's a matter of "yet", recorded a hat trick in his NHL career??? He apparently has 26 or 36 (can't remember the number i heard on the highlight reel last night) 2 goal games, but has never scored the 3rd! He hit the post last night on a beautiful deflection to no avail! Not a pp goal, not even an empty netter for a 3rd! Crazy! Certainly was a surprise to me! |

Posted - 01/02/2011 : 09:45:37 So all Doan needs is three more goals in two games to be the player with the most goals with no hattricks, eh?
It actually really makes sense that it would be a high scoring defenceman like Murphy that would be up there, so to me, it makes it all the weirder that Doan might soon become the champ of hattrick futility.

Posted - 01/01/2011 : 15:35:48 nuxfan....that link was from 2008 so i had a quick read of Sykora's wikipedia page and found this:
The following season, on December 11, 2008, Sıkora scored his 8th, 9th, and 10th goals of the season for his first career NHL hat trick against the New York Islanders at Mellon Arena.[5] Sıkora had previously recorded 38 career two-goal games in his career, the all-time NHL record for most two-goal games without a single hat trick.[6] Later that season, on April 7, 2009, Sıkora scored his 300th career NHL goal in a 6-4 victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning
So, does that leave Larry Murphy as our answer? It's one heckuva good trivia question i will say! |

Posted - 01/01/2011 : 11:49:36 that thread also mentions that Sykora holds the record for most multi-goal games without a hattrick. |

Posted - 01/01/2011 : 11:00:20 according to this thread: http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=468904, the winners are Larry Murphy (287g), Petr Sykora (302g). Scott Mellanby also reached 300 goals without a hattrick, but got one later in his career.
So, Doan could be in some very elite company by the time he retires. I see he had another 2 goal game last night... |

Posted - 01/01/2011 : 10:21:22 This brings up an interesting trivia question, actually . . . who has the most goals for their career while never having scored a hattrick in the NHL?
Doan has 285 career goals, with no hattrick . . . and surely cab reach 300 without one, unless he gets lucky. Anyone have over 350 goals without one? Over 400?
My guess is the 400 mark is probably about the limit, as a career with that many goals means you have had several 30 goal seasons, and perhaps a 40 or two . . . and it's pretty hard not to score three at some point with those totals in a season at some point.
But does anyone know?

Posted - 12/30/2010 : 23:46:29 Still shocks the he77 outta me! There's no name guys out there with 3 goal games and he hasn't? Especially with that many 2 goal games? I mean, he hasn't had one lucky one go in for a 3rd? Never an empty netter for a 3rd? C'mon.....maybe it's just me, but i find that shocking. |

Posted - 12/30/2010 : 18:26:48 I was surprised only because he's been in the league for so long - if they hang around long enough, most players eventually get one. Doan has never been much of a goal scorer though - has only hit 30 twice in his career. He's a pretty steady 25g/65pt player |
