Man, a couple of BRUTAL hits in tonights LA vs Vancouver game! Third period, Canucks up 2-1 and Aaron Rome takes out Michael Handzus near the end boards. Jeff Tambellini and Handzus were both skating for the puck and arrived at it around the same time. Rome comes flying in a half second later and hits (with a little shove) Handzus who falls really awkwardly into the boards.
Not long later, at the same spot on the ice, Kyle Clifford absolutely hammered Chris Tanev into the boards (from behind). I have to admit, i saw this on TV when it happened and got a sick feeling in my stomach. I didn't think Tanev would get up. The slo mo replay doesn't make it seem as bad as it did "live". It's actually similar to the one we discussed a week or so ago when Burrows hit the dman from behind. On this one, there appears to be more contact with the dman, but still very similar.
Credit to both of these guys (Tanev and Hanzus) for getting up from these hits, but apparently the scare of suspensions hasn't quite sunk in to everyone's head just yet. Both of these were extremely reckless hits and i would expect them to be reviewed by the league!!!

Heard Tanev didn't join his mates at their skate today. Not at all surprised!
Sauve has been called up as a replacement. Not sure how long they expect Tanev out, but no sense in rushing him back when there's not much left to play for.
No word on how bad Tanev's "upper body injury" is. |

That Rome hit was unfortunate, and was made much worse by Handzus tripping over Tambo on the way in - had Tambo not been there it would have been a far different result.
I hope Tanev is OK, that was a brutal hit. I hope Clifford is suspended for it
I only saw the Doughty hit on Daniel very quickly on the highlights last night and didn't think it was bad at all. After watching on the link you provided, it does appear to be a little suspect and is somewhat blindside. It appears to me that it would have been more a hit from the side but because of Daniels left handed shot, he ended up turning slightly backwards (to get the shot off). I don't think this hit is too bad, but i may be singing a different tune had Daniel been hurt?
The Rome one is questionable for sure. I still have the feeling on a hit like this that is so close to the boards, that a guy doesn't need to do this. I don't like the fact that he kinda uses his arms to push/throw Zeus into the boards!
The Clifford hit was horrible! Like i said, it was a little like the Burrows one but with A LOT more contact as Clifford didn't appear to let up at all and his body even carried on into Tanev as he fell to the boards (whereas Burrows doesn't finish the check).
I'd be very surprised to hear that both Handzus and Tanev are feeling 100% today! |

I also caught replays of the Doughty hit on Daniel as he scored the first Canucks goal of the game. Not a headshot, but certainly blindside - no call.
Had it been Burrows throwing that hit it would have been 5 and a game for sure.
