Posted - 04/07/2011 : 21:38:06 I wanted to start another thread to take the fighting in the game debate, to a different direction.
I have no problem with fighting in the NHL, if it's heat of the moment, not pre-arranged, not staged, and not done with enough time to discuss rules and appropriate fight wear, before the punching starts. That is not relevant to this thread and has been discussed in others.
My question is as thus,
Is it/should it be allowed anywhere other than the NHL?
I would particularly like to hear opinions about it's validity or lack thereof, in leagues where there is no immediate pro contract in the future, beer leagues, minor leagues, etc.
I am of the opinion that it is no longer necessary at these levels, and I would consider anyone finding it necessary, to be a poser, a wannabe if you will.
My opinion only, hoping to hear constructive points regarding differing opinions. |

I think you missed a small but significant word there Captain Assumption.
.…................
I'd sure hate to get into a scrap in a Senior Men's game only to find out that the guy I am trying to sell my product to, in the real world, the one that pays the bills, is the same guy I beat the crap out of at the last game....
Whoa whoa whoa!!!! What makes you think you'd win that fight?! Who's Captain Assumption now mister?!?!
Geez!....still you guys wearing the Cape of Assumption, there's no way I'd pick a fight with someone I was almost positive I couldn't beat up!
It's for that reason alone they don't let me play in the Church Group's under 14 league anymore!

FE your comparing Senior Hockey to beer league Hockey? WTF? How bad are the players in whatever town your from that you can make this comparison??
Beer League = most players never played organized hockey and are there to have fun...
Senior Hockey = junior a, WHL, Div. 1, ex pro players who still want to play at a competitive level....
Ok I have played Beer League Hockey for 3 seasons before this last winter because I had a bad back and could no longer take a hit without paying for it for a couple days. 100% no need for fighting as it is a no contact league and it’s just for fun.
This year I went back to senior after Three years off and 100% I say fighting is fine in that league. You got guys that have been playing the game this way for 10+ years. I am in a 8 team league each team plays each team 3 time in reg. season. I would say 1 in 5 games had a fight, really not a big deal but sometimes it is just needed.
Minor Hockey no not needed at all period!!
Women’s hockey.....only in the shower after the game

I do like your thinking about fighting in leagues other than the pros!
Still not sold on why a competitive league, NOT the NHL, would label fighting as 'needed', I still feel this more about posing than competition, but am open to discussion about it.

Beer league meaning that, and Senior Men's town teams, Adult Safe leagues, there are fights at all of these for sure, and yes, some are dealt with pretty harshly. My concern is that they happen at all, and should the excuse of, 'it's part of the game', be relevant anywhere other than the pros.
I play a ton of hockey in Beer leagues and Senior Elite aswell... In the Senior league there is a rule of 3 fights and you are banned from the league for the year, I really like this rule. Most players who play in the senior league if not all have played a minimum of Junior AAA which is the equivlant of Junior A in ontario a step below major junior, many have played major Junior and some pro hockey, for example the other goalie on my team is only 2 years removed from his last AHL contract with the Hershey Bears. These are all guys who have played in leagues where Fighting is just a 5 min major generally. The way the Senior league works and the reason for why they have the 3 fights and you are gone rule is they want to preserve it as good fast hockey and not become a fight leaguen where people come to watch bench clearing brawls... I find it is really done well because the Ref decides what is considerd a fight and what isn't, the way it works if you fight in a game you are out for the rest of the game but have not other disiplinary action unless the fight occurs in the last 5 min of the game. If the fight occurs in the last 5 min of the game the player is subject to a suspension at the discretion of the ref. Once you have been ejected for fighting 3 times in a season your season is done no questions asked no appeals you are done.
It is really well managed in my opinion for example a teammate of mine and one of our best player got jumped a while back with 2 min left in the game. At first our player tried to keep his gloves on but when he realized he was getting mauled he had no choice to defend himself. He told us at the end of the fight he had the other guy down on his back helpless and could have easily got a couple free shots in and the ref trying to break it up said to him "if you don't punch him now i won't give you a fighting major" our player did not punch the helpless player and the reff true to his work gave our player a 4 min double minor for roughing mostly because he was attacked and had no real choice,
I think this setup is a very good way to police fighting in adult hockey leagues

Posted - 04/07/2011 : 23:34:52 No! As far as i'm concerned, beer league fights are no different than a brawl in the bar after the game! Just no need for it whatsoever!!! |

Posted - 04/07/2011 : 21:53:54 Its funny how much fighting has permeated the junior leagues, considering that for the majority of the NHL's goons (with some exceptions obviously) is that at the junior level, they all had game! I wont post individual stats, but a lot of fourth line players had a good skill set, stats or leadership factor in junior, but a lot of them say they had to "change their style" to stay at the pro level...and as long as they are getting paid amazing amounts of money for playing five minutes a night, who is going to tell them they are wrong?
Now if a player is a one-dimentional fighter in junior, it seems to be very unlikely that they will get an NHL contract in the first place. However those players with skill, who occasionally drop them in the heat of the moment, the "good fight" type of fighters, are much more likely to get to the NHL.
I guess what I'm saying is as long as even one GM drafts these types of players, and there is a chance a "goon" can make it to the NHL, then some people with lower skill sets will say it is "necessary" for them to fight in junior leagues.
as for "beer leagues" and any rec league with no shot of being drafted, I agree, fighting is absolutely useless...just a bunch of hyper-posturing. |
