Beans, i think you nailed it. Chicago just doesn't have the "horses" and it's the Canucks this year who are the deeper team. It seems like Kane/Toews/Sharp/Hossa (or some combo of the 3 of them) is on the ice every 2nd shift!!! Quenville doesn't have much other choice than to try to give them as much ice as they can handle as he just doesn't have the depth he had last year!
Another big difference so far is Luongo for sure. In game 1 when the Sedin's looked somewhat invisible, he steps up and steals the game. Game 3, especially in the first and even more so, especially vs Kane, Luongo held them in it and gave them a chance to win. Game 2 was the opposite, Luongo struggles but the Sedin's step up and play what so far is their best game of the series. This team is deep enough that key players can have off games and the team can still win. Beans, it makes me think about your point about teams like Toronto and how they have to have everyone firing on all cylinders to have any hope at a win.
In all, the series has been entertaining for sure. For anyone who hasn't watched, it's closer than a 3-0 series as you can maybe tell by the close scores. Could easily be 2-1 right now.
Personally, i'm hoping for the sweep (sorry nuxfan ) as i don't like to see a team allow the other to linger around. We've seen recent examples of teams coming back from 3-0 down and i don't want any part of an extended series at this point! Beans has clearly explained in the other thread that i'm not a part of the team, therefore i see no need to get another home game and it's profits (since i don't share in them)! Time to stick a fork in'em while their down!! |

I'm sure no one did - no on in Vancouver could have predicted a possible sweep, or the way they have held off the top line off the scoreboard so effectively. Luongo has also played substantially better than people thought he might, the defense has stepped up physically in a way no one thought they might, and they're getting scoring from all over the place, not just 1 line. Everyone is playing to the fullest of their abilities.
The one thing that stands out this year is lack of depth in the CHI lineup - last year they had 3 solid scoring lines and depth in the 4th line as well, while VAN did not. This year its the other way around - VAN has all the depth with 3 solid lines and 3 defensive pairings that can play in all situations, and CHI is scrambling to spread out their skill to make up 2 half-effective lines. VAN had no business getting out of that first period last night down 1-0, and overall they managed to win a game that they really shouldn't have, and thats all about differences in depth. |

Chicago does look beat and I am surprised at this. Not so much that Vancouver is winning. I bet with my heart to see them lose but logic says the Canucks should win. However, I didn't expect a spanking. There was a point in the 1st period of game 3 where I thought, "Here we go again," when there was a parade to the Vancouver penalty box. However, different than previous years is Luongo making saves he has no business making and keeping his team in the game.
I do see this series much like the Boston series in that Chicago is losing as much as Vancouver is winning the series. Perhaps Chicago just doesn't have the horses to keep up this season but they sure look to be working awfully hard to keep up. They are not letting the talent they have use the game in front of them. They are trying to force things that are not there.
Chicago might win game 4 but I see this series over by the week end. |

nuxfan, I do agree with you on one point:
This is the best hockey in the playoffs that I have seen, thus far. Many of the other series have been ordinary . . . and others (Boston/Montreal) have been a huge disappointment.
But it's tonnes of skilled plays, end to action often, fast skating, hard hitting. A real shame that it might be so short, although I'd almost lay money on the Hawks getting the next game for pride's sake.

game 2 was not Luongo's best game, but games 1 and 3 he was the undisputed #1 star of the game, he has been awesome. His saves on Kane alone would be enough for a highlight reel.
Yeah, if he can keep this level of play up we'll go far. But the team is doing well in front of him - very balanced scoring, solid defensive play. I don't think anyone seriously thought this series could be a sweep, but it does seem likely now, CHI looks beat. |

If Luongo can hold it together the way he has been, wow! Canucks are going to make a hell of a run this year. I think that the Sedins have to start playing harder on the backcheck and take less lazy penalties. I think they will win the next game in CHI for the sweep b/c CHI will be taking so many chances to open up the scoring that VAN will pounce on the open ice. |

The Canucks are impressing the hell out of me with this series, and it has been the best series I've been watching so far (although I'm biased so who knows...). They are owning CHI in every aspect of the game so far, and have been punishing them physically at every opportunity - Edler has been a monster. CHI not having a viable 3rd and 4th line response has been the difference this year, VAN is clearly the deeper team.
I called VAN in 6, thinking CHI would put up a fight, but up 2-0 now and playing the way they are, perhaps in 5? As beat up as they are, I don't see CHI dropping both games in Chicago, if only just out of pride. |

Playoffs are a whole different ballgame than the regular season, it doesn't matter what you've accomplished in the regular season come playoff time. With that said, the Canucks will wilt under the pressure of the defending champs. |

I like this matchup. Although DAL would have been the easier road IMO, getting a chance to beat CHI will be a good booster for the Canucks. They're either going to win this series, and gain a ton of confidence by exercising some old demons...or they're going to lose and realize they have a huge psychological barrier with CHI and will never beat them.
Either way it will be telling. |

The Hawks have nothing left in the tank, with Bolland out they don't have enough defensively responsible players to shut down the Nucks scoring threats, and Crawford is showing his inexperience.
The Canucks on the other hand have arguably the best D core in the league, two top scoring lines, and depth between the posts. The only questions going into the playoffs is the 3rd line without Manny's FO excellence and if Lou can prove he's not a playoff headcase.
It must be said that in a conference as talented as the west no playoff team should be underestimated. |

I think the Canucks might roll over the Hawks this year. I just don't see the Hawks as organised defensively against a good team, and they are not as deep. And, I am sure the Canucks have a huge grudge against this team, and will go in guns a blazing.
I voted Nucks in 5 . . . but who really knows? The Hawks could push it back into a longer series with strong goaltending, and a weak effort or two from Luongo.

Nucks will win in 6. The Hawks were decimated in the offseason and... NO BYFUGLIEN! Buuuuuuuut. if the canucks win and the ducks win vs nashville, the canucks will be playing the, ducks. who eliminated us 3 years ago in the second round. DAMN!
