Posted - 05/09/2011 : 21:02:13 It's an impossible task to determine who has the best fans in hockey, or in any sport. It's very subjective, and biases are obvious. For example, how many Oiler fans would acknowledge that Flames fans are better, or the other way around? For example, Flames fans will describe that they have the most fans wearing team jerseys at their home games and Oiler fans will point out their number of Stanley Cups, Hall of Famers, etc.
When using the term "fans," some will suggest that this term can only refer to actual people who show up for games. In a literal sense, this is true, but who hasn't heard this reference in broader terms? Specifically, that the lack of support for a team (bums in seats, season ticket sales) shows how fickle fans are in certain cities. Sure, the fans in the seats should be acknowledged for being there, but what about the "fans" who don't show up? The "fans" who once did, but no longer show up for a variety of reasons.
I have no attachment to the city of Winnipeg (or the Jets who played there), but their "fans" are to be admired. In number of hockey fans, Winnipeg surely beats out a number of US cities with NHL teams as great hockey fans. I would guess that 200,000+ people in the Winnipeg area consider hockey their favourite sport, and would overwhelmingly support an NHL team given another opportunity. (With strong ownership, and a vastly improved Canadian dollar in hand.)
To make the point, how many "fans" in Cleveland, Kansas City or Hartford (cities which had NHL teams) are vying to have an NHL team again? I'm guessing the interest is relatively insignificant. The same cannot be said about Winnipeg (or Quebec City for that matter), cities which have great fans with an immense passion for the game of hockey.
But the NHL will continue to do its utmost to keep a team in Phoenix (or any other faltering US franchise) only because 24 out of 30 teams are domiciled in the US, and one really knows that these 24 US teams would rather spend a million dollars per year propping up Phoenix rather than dealing with the lost revenues when a team from an unknown location in the Great White North comes to town. And that's the real reason why the NHL is in no big hurry to grant new franchises to Winnipeg, Quebec City, Hamilton, etc. (or relocate franchises there), despite the fact that over 50% of the hockey talent comes from Canada! ticket sells when

Posted - 05/09/2011 : 13:58:40 Beans, excellent post! Well said, and so very true. Of course of those Vancouver fans who consistently jump on an off the bandwagon, pretty much ALL of them chant LUUUUUU after every breathtaking save shoot-in he stops behind the net for his dmen. |
Beans15 |
Posted - 05/09/2011 : 11:36:51 See, this is where I struggle. Are we bagging on Phoenix because they don't have enough fans or are we bagging on the actual fans in Phoenix? I think that is where I started with my points towards Sashis. A fan is fan. A non-fan is a non-fan. It would be moronic to argue that any American City has more fans (per capita) than any place in Canada. However, that does not make the actual fans in one place any better or worse or more or less knowledgable. There may be fewer, but that doesn't mean anything.
I still believe there are good and bad fans for every team. For every Vancouver fan that jumps on and off the bandwagon there is an Edmonton fan dreaming up Horcoff for Malkin trades, a Calgary fan who believes they will win the Cup next year simply because they have "Iggy", a Leaf fan who thinks Reimer is better than Brodeur ever was, a Sens fan who sees consistency with Spezza, and a Hab fan who thinks a forward group all under 6' tall are 'big enough' to win the Cup.
Good and bad are everywhere. |

Posted - 05/09/2011 : 11:05:21 Worst fans in the league . . . if you are talking "behaviour", it's Philly. If it's worst fans in terms of how they support their team . . . gotta be Phoenix.
But then again, Phoenix never had more than a handful of fans to begin with, so it's sort of like making fun of a one armed guy playing volleyball - just not polite.

Posted - 05/09/2011 : 10:41:28 The worst fans in the league have to be Montreal Fans (including announcer Bob Cole) Let me think... the Ole, Ole song... booing Carey Price (Hal Gill even thought that was bush league)... having to be reminded by the PA announcer in Montreal before the US national anthem, that there were US born players on the Canadiens team, so the fans would not Boo the anthem...oh brother! |

Posted - 05/08/2011 : 18:48:35 Bruins, Lightning and Flames are the best, everyone else sucks!
Seriously, I think that fans in Florida, Nashville, Pheonix and Atlanta are the worst and Calgary is the best. Through thick and thin, we love our team and players and have a lot of knowledge to back up our opinions.
Boston, Detroit, Pittsburgh and Philly are good as well.

I am far from 'never wrong about anything' but I can comfortably say when there is an ignorant view. This is about about being right or wrong, it's about being part of reality. Sashis point is basically not about fans but about populations in general. Are there as many fans of hockey in ANA as there is in Edmonton?? Heck no!! But if you are looking at an Edmonton 'fan' and an Anaheim 'fan' there will be tons if similarity. One of those being their knowledge. Not unlike people from Edmonton who do not watch hockey, people who do not watch hockey in ANA wouldn't know much about the sport, would they??
Sashis is proof that even fans of the same team have very different bases on knowledge. |

Posted - 05/06/2011 : 17:31:41 Please........... Canuck fans are fickle at best strong when winning nowhere to be found when they don't!!! Selling out an arena doesn't make the fans great! Having said that Fans from the original six city's are all devoted and smart hockey fans.
Beans said it best though in a previous thread "Every team has good and bad fans" which I agree with. My distain for Vancouver fan's is living among them for 39 of Their 40 years off and on and watching them react to their teams fortunes with comments like I always liked the Flames or whoever?? The arrogance is because they act like they have won cups. Last time I looked They weren't on there?? |

Posted - 05/06/2011 : 09:23:01 Sashis, the only thing proven is that hockey is not the centre of the universe in every place. The ignorant part is when people think it is or should be.
Country music has deep, deep roots in Nashville. They basically started one of the largest music genres. From Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash to today's stars, including Mr. Underwood. But since Nashville has had a hockey team for about a decade than people should automatically reference hockey with that city??
LA has been the centre of the entertainment industry for a century. At the peak her career, Janet Jones was a very popular in Hollywood. So when her husband gets traded to the entertainment capital of the world, I guess that means hockey should automatically be more popular??
So yes, I proved your point that hockey is not the centre of the universe everywhere. You have also proven my point of the ignorance of some hockey fans. Unfortunately, we both cheer for the same team. As another indication of your ignorance is the 6000+ posts I have made and refered to being an Oiler fan. The final ignorance is that Canada is the best fan, period. I woul d think there are a number of markets (Minnesota, NY, STL, SJ, BOS, DET, PHI to name a few) who would argue that. |

well the canucks fans are the most arrogant and the thrashers and panthers fans are the least devoted. Montreal fans are the most passionate, leafs fans are the most devoted. The fans with the most hockey knowledge is a 6 way tie between the 6 canadian cities. We canadian fans make american fans look stupid, which if you're from nashville changes mike fishers name to carrie underwood's husband.
Go OILERS Go!!!
Wow, country music capital of the world and someone makes a smart a$$ comment like this??? Geez, when Wayne Gretzky, the most decorated and famous player to ever play the game, was refered to as "Janet Jones' Husband" when he was trade to LA.
Keep it up Sashis, it will soon be the Oilers who have the most ignorant fans with comments like this!!
Ya if they actually called gretzky that then that proves my point so thank you. I'd call leaf fans the stupidist after that remark, but it's not fair to other leaf fans. btw the smartest fans is a testament to the canadian fans and there knowledge, not to the american fans lack of. It's called exaggeration |

Posted - 05/04/2011 : 23:14:50 You could go with the Maple Leafs for both. Those guys plan the parade route in August and stand by their team even though they have mediocre team after mediocre team put on the ice. They also never shut up, have probably ruined some players careers by putting too much pressure on them too soon, and act like their the best when their team is obviously terrible.
A case can be made for all Canadian teams, like the Oilers who were in a small market and a bunch of people teamed up to save the team from moving. We also have been very patient with the rebuild, but I think the patience will begin to wear thin soon if we dont show at least decent improvement next year.
