Posted - 05/25/2011 : 07:31:14 I think if TB goes back to the style they played against Pitt and Wash (meaning the trap) against Vancouver, they can win. They shut down Washington and made them look like amateurs and that was one of the top offensive teams in the NHL!! A 93% PK, better goals for, fewer goals against, very similar performance all around. Plus, they beat the #4, and #2 seed already and might pull out a win against the #3 seed. Tough road to the Cup.
And Slozo, I don't disagree that Boston has not been as dominating on defense as they have been in the past, but I think some of your statements are a little less than accurate. Such as giving up 3rd period leads?? Boston has a 1.000 win % when leading after the 2nd period. They gave up a 3rd period lead once against TB in game 5 and twice against Montreal. Both times they gave up a lead against Montreal, the teams were tied after the 2nd period, Boston scored 1st in the 3rd period followed by an answering goal by Montreal. They also won 2 of those 3 games. I am not sure of your definition of many, but I don't see it. Also, the comment about you scratch your head as to why they are where they are?? How about they are the best team in the playoffs 5 on 5. They have a 1.72 5 on 5 goals for and against ratio. Best in the playoffs by a wide margin. The next best team is Chicago as 1.27(which was the team Vancouver most struggled with.)
Before one makes comments like 'massive upset' it might be wise to take a look at reality. Boston has a better record, better GF/game, better GA/game, far better 5 on 5 play, and a better PK than those mighty Canucks. The only piece that Vancouver has over Boston is PP.
Stil scratching your head??? Either team coming out of the East will be a massive test for the Canucks. One has to remember that the Canucks were dominated at times by the Blackhawks who actually buried their chances and the Sharks who simply did not. There were stretches of games where San Jose owned the Canucks and Luongo and some bounces kept them in those games. It was far closer than the 5 games would suggest. |

Posted - 05/25/2011 : 04:54:05 Sorry guys - you think Chara is going to stop the Sedins and Kesler all at once? Please tell me how that awesome Boston defence is going to stop the offensive juggernaut that is Vancouver . . . 'cause I don't see it.
Even when I was very wrong about Boston (against Philly), it's not like they beat them with defence. The same with Tampa Bay, although I will respectfully tip my hat to Thomas' last win, which was his game (his usual one out of every three good games). But you will see - I have a feeling that TB is not out of it yet at all, and Boston to me is one of those teams where I literally scratch my head and wonder how they got here.
Their defence has been terrible at times; they have given up many leads in the third; and yet, they manage to win.
It's a baffling team, and unless this "destiny" thing carries over in a huge way by beating TB and pulling off a massive upset against Vancouver . . . I think they'd be out real fast against the Nucks.

If they end up facing TB, I think they will cruise to the win. Looking at the matchup, they both play offensively focused games, but Vancouver just does it better. They also have a much better rounded defensive core. Just the better team overall.
The Canucks have had a hard time with the chippy teams, the Sedins especially, after being guarded by Bolland and Fisher. I think the team will have to look outside of Daniel and Henrik, once again if their opponent is Boston. I don't think they can handle the hard hitting, gritty Boston lineup.
Tampa Bay is an easy win, giving the Sedins room to cycle, but Boston will shut them down, and if Vancouver can't find big performances from outside of the twins then the Bruins will take it all.
As Vancouver has not had much oppurtunity to match up against either of these teams, what are your thoughts? |

Thats OK Beans - I've been pretty successful this year at picking them, and I'm cheering for the Canucks. Perhaps I'll balance you out. |

Posted - 05/24/2011 : 22:26:01 The Canucks were totally outplayed for virtually the entire overtime and found a way to win. They did that against Chicago a few times and Nashville at least once. That's what champions do. Take nothing away from them, congrats.
Now that the moment has been savored, I must burst the bubble. Every single team I have cheered for this play off season has lost. I started with Pitt and Chi as my picks, both out in the first round. I then went to Philly and Det, both out in the second round. I then went to SJ and TB and we all see where that is going.
Here it comes, the kiss of death. I am picking Vancouver to win the Cup!!!
(I am also going to put $25 on the Canucks at the local sports book. That way, if I win I can feel better about paying Alex with found money. If I lose, I am out $25 anyway. I would rather lose $25 to the casino!) |
