definitely a risk/reward scenario... but if he plays like he did against boston in the playoffs its worth every penny. JVR showed in that series a rare combination of size and speed, i honestly didn't know he was that fast and strong on the puck he was skating around defenders and crashing the net with the puck. the way he attacked the goalie was impressive and had it not been for thomas his numbers would have been a lot better in that series. also, when the majority of philly players had given up in that series JVR continued to show his willingness to compete. i truly believe richards and carter became expendable after JVR had his coming out party this past playoffs. |

Posted - 08/31/2011 : 08:40:53 Just out of curiousity, is 6 years after 2 seasons any more insane than a 5 year deal after 3 seasons?? Kessel got a 5 year deal for more money per year after 3 seasons. Granted, that 3rd season of Kessel was great. However, Kessel's numbers during his first 2 seasons are very comparable to what JVR has done during his first 2 seasons.
Although, I am a little surprised to see how quickly Philly is spending the money they saved this summer. |

Posted - 08/30/2011 : 12:33:06 ya the back end of this contract could make philly management look genius but if JVR doesn't pan out its a long contract to saddle up. all in all IMO great move i can't see him anything less than a perrenial top 30 scorer in the next 2-3 years |

Posted - 08/30/2011 : 11:34:39 This appears to be one of those deals for a player who could turn out to be terrific. The $4.25 million looks steep for 40 pts. However, if this kid find improvement in his 3rd year and even slightly increases his numbers he will be worth it. What I mean by that is if he scores 40 pts playing 12 minutes a game and that same production related to playing 20 minutes a game, he should be 65ish point players. Crank that up just a bit and get in the 70-75 pt range as a 3rd year players and the cap hit is great.
Obviously, there are a number of if's in there, but that is exactly what this contract is. If's. |
