Not sure if I should post this here? I am a rookie after all!!

I would like to see the Oilers give Devon Dubnyk a legitimate shot at the starting goaltender position with Khabibulin as his back up. He's a big presence at 6'6" and 202 lbs with a save % of .917 and 2.71 GA average in 35 games last year. According to the coaching staff, he's ready to take the next step and obviously he is the future starter for the young Oilers.

It's my opinion that the team should develop with all the youth playing in key situations including in goal.

looking for feedback as I had this discussion with my boys last week.

There are some decent goalies coming up as FA in 2012 such as Voukun, Rinne, Niityymaki, and there are even more at FA in 2013.

Now is not the time. Also, if Dubnyuk continues his progress, he will be a very serviceable #1 keeper.

I would agree this in not the team I would put in the playoffs and hope for success. But is this team on paper a team that can challenge for 8th. I'd say yes with a proven starter for 50-60 games a year and a proven winning record. How bout Nabokov? Not saying hes a franchise goalie but wow that guy has played a lot of hockey this decade and he is in a 3 goalie race for playing time. Ray Emery in Anehiem has no offer and has played well at this level when not embroiled in personal situations. Either way good goalies to groom up and coming Dubnyk if he can make the move to #1

I think with a rebuilding team, what the Oil are doing is very similar to what the Leafs already went through, actually - make sure you get a competent experienced goalie, and set yourself up with some young talent to see if they can break through and become the starter.

I think the Oil already have and will be giving Dubnyk a legitimate stab at the starter's job . . . hell, anytime you get a few starts in a row, that is your shot, man. You keep playing great or winning or both, and the team will keep you in net - it really is that simple.

I think the Oil are probably doing it right . . . although that's no guarantee that Dubnyk falls flat or that Khabibulin spends the year in jail or something

Mike Gillis will! As soon as the Oilers send T. Hall this way!

All kidding aside, i agree that there's no panic just yet for the Oil to lock up a young stud, or find one for that matter. The free agent route could be a good way to go, but it will be easier for them after a FA see's a really improved season out of them. Let's face it, the desire to play in Edm is not at the top of most guys lists, however, ice a winner and the Oilers odds go up of landing either a FA or a guy with a NTC.

you re right if by chance a Lindback or a Schnieder is made available obviously for the right price the oilers should make the move, but who knows what happens before the 2012 2013 season i mean Price could pull a Roy and demand a trade in the following offseason because he is not getting the contract he wants, and bam the Oilers can swoop in and pick him up for Roy and a draft pick or something like that, lets face it the oil is a least one more season away from contending ,,, at least if they wait long enough they may land on a great young goalie maybe even a Bernier ,, Quick has shown no sign of giving up his job for the kid maybe the oil pick up Bernier at the end of the season when Quick wins another 35 plus games this season, the oil should just wait

This is year #3 for this debate for me and you Beans. I wonder if will you finally agree. This is the time for the Oilers to start shopping for a goalie. Khabi although he has a cup season and a great past resume, has a habit of not playing a full season, either due to health or personal issues. If it was me I'd play Khabi early and often. Get his trade value up and shop for a reliable younger starter. (btw, I'm not certain is he cleared to play both countries after his legal issues)

Dubnyk, although a fine backup, should not be responsible for majority of Edmonton's games "now". Philly, Toronto, Vancouver finally figured it out. When will Edmonton. If you wanna build thru the draft take the pressure off the young players and put a bonified 50-60 game goalie in net with a "winning record". If Dubnyk is your man groom him slowly and make him play his way into a #1 position.

And, I am not suggesting there are many available goalies who can fit that bill. I am suggesting if I was the man reviewing my teams past weakness's, this is the most glaring hole throughout the roster.

Either way I am hoping for good things in Edmonton now, as I am a resident now and would love to cheer for them on a home game.

I don't think the either goalie matters in the short term. Although I do believe the Oilers will be a better team this season and will not be a basement dweller, they are still at least a season from being a legitimate playoff team. At least one season. The only question is in development as Khabibulin has 2 more season on his deal. Dubnyk will be the #1 either today or after that.

Personally, I would like to see them split duties nearly down the middle. I don't want to see Dubnyk get a pile of losses this season and lose confidence.
