Which goalie would you take first overall in a wins and shutouts only pool?

Joshua, I understand your argument, but the fact that he is "1 year removed" from elite status means just that - he is removed. You can look at it as a blip in an otherwise stellar career, but frankly, I look at it as a 39 year old goaltender starting to show his age and start the decline downwards. He's already injured with a hamstring problem, and I expect no more than 30 wins this year from Brodeur, and quite possibly less.

I agree with Slozo - Hedberg was acquired for a reason, he is a quasi-starting backup goalie that can play 40 games in relief should he have to. Going forward past this coming season, I see NJ starting fresh in goal as Brodeur likely closes the door on a stellar career.

Don't forget Thomas had a hidden injury 2 years ago, taken over by Rask. But the next year who won the cup? Im not saying NJ has as strong a team as Boston, but he could make another comeback.
None the less you could find a safer choice.

I care that he had a bad year last year - especially when he's 39 years old. Being historically the best goalie in the league does not guarantee future success forever, and he's starting to show signs of slowing down. I don't think Brodeur will do as well as Crawford, or Rinne (good call guest, forgot about him), or a healthy Hiller in this coming year.

1 year removed from a 45 win season. Last season NJ was all about the Kovalchuk saga and a rare Brodeur injury. I'd figure him for 60+ games played and 35-40 wins. No true contender in NJ to steal his #1 spot either.

Also potentially 1 year removed from retirement.

And Hedberg is 100% a goalie that could play more than half the games for New Jersey if needed. That is why they have a goalie like him - experienced, pretty decent goalie who can play at least 20 games, and can be the starter if necessary.

There doesn't have to be a contender to steal Brodeur's #1 spot . . . . he just has to break down or fail. Which in this case, is a distinct possibility.

I see a 30 win season at best for Brodeur myself.

Because he wasn't on your list of alternates I had to check to see if he was injured or was considering retirement. He is neither. So why would you bet against argueably the best goalie ever. I dont care if he had a bad year last year, he still played in 50+ games due to injury and I believe NJ has the potential of improving in the standings this year.
JOSHUACANADA Posted - 09/21/2011 : 13:11:24
Uhm, Brodeur. Seems like a lock for me.
Guest6373 Posted - 09/21/2011 : 13:11:05
Since he isn't on that second list, Rinne no question!!!!!! Will play around 70 games with a very solid defensive team in front of him. I see at least 35 wins and 5 shutouts from him this season.
nuxfan Posted - 09/21/2011 : 12:08:39
tough one. If all those goalies are gone, I would suggest looking at this group:

- Crawford - clear #1 right now on a very good CHI team, if he plays to potential 35 wins should be easy. He'd be my first choice of those goalies remaining.

- Hiller - all signs say he's healthy to start the year, and if he is, 30-35 wins is within reach on a pretty good looking ANA team. Health is the only question mark.

- Halak - STL looks to be much improved this year, and I would not be surprised if they're close to the top-8 in the west this year, just missing the playoffs. Halak is their clear #1, so he's going to get a ton of starts, and 30 wins is not an unreasonable expectation for him.

- Lehtonen - won 34 last year on a DAL team that just missed the playoffs. They lost Richards in the offseason, but didn't get worse defensively, he should be pushing for 30 wins again this season.

- Pavelec - no one has any expectations for WPG this year, but I think they'll be decent. He managed 21 wins in 58 games last year before falling to injury at the end, and if healthy should be capable of 25-30 wins in a full season. Streaky.

- one of Vokoun or Neuvirth - looks like they'll probably share the starts. 40-50 starts for one of them should be good for 25-30 wins on a good playoff team.

I'll tweak this topic a little bit as it relates to a pool i'm in.
You're allowed to choose one goalie, and pts count for wins and shutouts only. However, the catch is you CAN'T choose any of the following:
Luongo
Price
Ward
Kipper
Howard
Lundqvist
MA Fleury
Bryzgalov
Thomas
Quick
Niemi
Miller

Who would your choice be?

Garon has taken the Number 1 job from Roloson before, and Roly the goalie aint getting any younger

I'm totally biased by my love for the habs, but i also wholeheartedly believe he can lead the league in wins AGAIN and possibly shut outs.

Price did lead the league last year ,, its not like he was calling for some goalie with absolutly no shot

Slozo, i'm not lost on the fact that Vokoun is great and could have a career year. Problem for me is, as discussed, is that he could possibly find himself in a time share situation. There's too many "could's", "if's", etc attached to him.

I just think Lundqvist is more of a sure thing at this point.

Ditto again from myself, with this caveat:

I wouldn't say it's a hands down pick, because of two veteran goalies on two very good teams - Luongo, and now Vokoun. We might be able to take out Luongo and say he'll have a dip in performance after the way the playoffs ended for them, and for the fact they played so many damn games . . .

. . . but Vokoun is interesting for me as a potential "co-#1". I don't think people realise how good he really is, having played for Nashville and no Florida . . . some stats for his last 5 years that give an indication of his standard:
SAVE PERCENTAGE / GAMES PLAYED / SHUTOUTS
05/06 (Nashville) .919 61gp 4 so
06/07 (Nashville) .920 44gp 5 so
07/08 (Florida) .919 69gp 4 so
08/09 (Florida) .926 59gp 6 so
09/10 (Florida) .925 63gp 7 so
10/11 (Florida) .922 57gp 6 so

We are talking about an older goalie, yes - but one that is still at the top of his game. Suddenly, he is on the Caps, predicted to once again be the top regular season team in the eastern conference.
It could be a career season for Vokoun, is what I am saying. It's been 4 years since Vokoun had 30 wins, but if ever there was a goalie guaranteed to get that number if healthy, it might be Vokoun this year.

"Take off, eh?" - Bob and Doug

Neuvirth in 48 games last season went 27-12-4 with a 2.45 G.A.A and a .914 sv% last season it would be hard for the Caps to justify giving him less starts, i mean he is 23 he is their future, with that being said he will get less starts but i just can`t see the caps giving him less than 40 starts so that leaves 42 for Vokoun,,,

bottom line Vokoun is not going to play enough to mean much to a pool

Bryz over Lundqvist? No.

If you have an opportunity to take the first goalie drafted in a pool, I think Lundqvist is the goalie to take.
Guest4866 Posted - 09/10/2011 : 06:34:11
Bryzgalov anyone?
