The NHL has decided not to suspend for this hit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wp4UxGZaz-Q , Shanahan explained that Campoli had the puck and was upright when Malone locked in and committed to he hit, And when the player chaseing Campoli lifted his stick cause Campoli to lose he puck and bend over when it was too late for Malone to hold up.

AS most know i`m a habs fan but even as a habs fan i totaly agree with this assesment , Malone was penalized on the ice for the hit and in my opinion that was more than enough, When he lined up for the hit it was a perfectly legal hit and the circumstances are what caused the hit to be a headshot, in this cases give him a 2 min penalty for the head shot and leave it at that in my opinion,

I think this part above is very interesting. I like the fact that you aren't taking into consideration anything else he did that night. I feel that is very fair. BUT, was the principal point of contact not Campoli's head? To not punish him is saying he didn't mean to. Fine, but what about all the other similar hits where the hitter "didn't mean to"???

When it comes to assessing the “punishment” for these head shot plays, I think that everyone must consider the circumstances that led to the hit in question.
If you look at the hit alone, or the 2 to 3 second time period that led to the hit, then you are going to miss an important element of the entire situation.
For this specific incident, and looking at the entire situation, Malone was chasing any Hab that moved for that entire game right off the opening faceoff. Malone had a double minor in the first for roughing, and a high-sticking minor at the start of the second, which led to a Hab’s goal to make it 2-0. You knew something like this was coming if you watched the game.
Therefore, for the way this incident developed, I think he deserved some sort of punishment or suspension.
If you remove what actually led to this incident and look at only the 2 to 3 seconds of the hit, then I think the hit got the punishment it deserved via only the penalty given on the ice.

from the looks of it Malone could have atleast let up, he had atleast 3 seconds from when Campoli lost the puck and reached out to getting hit. thats lots of time in hockey, lots of time.

Pasty, i have to disagree. Looked clearly like a headshot to me!

I have a funny feeling, it's gonna be a long season of suspension talks!

Going into 3 pools this week, no point trying to guess who's gonna play a full season!
