Posted - 11/24/2011 : 08:30:39 I know it's American Thanksgiving tomorrow, but really, no games tonight? I can live without hockey for one night , but I'm just curious if the NHL has always left Thanksgiving "Eve" dark?
I know the CBA dictates that there are no games on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and that makes sense.
But Thanksgiving Eve? There were two games scheduled on the eve of Canadian Thanksgiving, both games which took place in Canada. But Thanksgiving is not a huge holiday in Canada.
I know Thanksgiving is a big deal in the states, but interestingly, there are 13 games taking place tomorrow, which is very unusual for a Friday. Except for the fact that it's US Thanksgiving.

Posted - 11/25/2011 : 12:06:44 It's the almighty TV dollar to blame. Obviously no American station will sacrifice their Thanksgiving NFL game times for the NHL but it appears NBC wanted some games this afternoon. Watching the BOS/DET game as we speak and the are calling it "the Thanksgiving Classic."
I guess when you give the NHL a $2 billion deal you can dictate the schedule to a certain degree. But I agree there was no reason to not have any games last night. |

i think this should happen at ever quater of the season! its a great opportunity to keep your players in the NHL fresh so there are no tired players and it keeps them energized for energitic games.
I know what you're getting at, but this one day does absolutely NOTHING in that regard. Teams routinely get 2, 3, 4, etc days break between games. I honestly don't see how this one day would be any different for a team than any other day off!
How about Det, Bos, Mtl and Phi, who all play afternoon games today? They aren't even getting a full 2 days between games!! Plus, many other teams are playing both the day before and the day after this one day break. It's not like they would have had any teams playing 3 days in a row!!! |

Posted - 11/24/2011 : 18:30:35 I'm not sure why canadian teams are playing in the afternoon because it's american thanksgiving. How many people will be able to catch the oilers game in Minny at 2 local? Although those games are usually not the best for the oil, that still kinda pisses me off.

Posted - 11/24/2011 : 17:39:32 they may of lost everygame in the first 30% of the season but they won almost everygame in the last 70% so any team that wins 70% of the time has a pretty good chance of making it to the playoffs. |

The excitement level doesn't reach that of the Canucks, of course, but yes, the people here are pretty stoked. Especially in light of the fact that the team started the season at 0 and 5, which means the Lions have been playing playoff football (essentially) for months.
Now back to Hockey!!!
ha, no doubt. Only in the CFL can a team that lost every game for the first 30% of the season somehow make it to the finals |

Posted - 11/24/2011 : 12:27:38 Thanks Nuxfan! It makes sense now. I shoulda known that tomorrow was US Thanksgiving!
I just checked last year's schedule, and there was one game (Colorada at Edmonton) on US Thanksgiving, and a bunch of games the following day. (Black Friday.)
For hockey fans who enjoy other sports, there's some NFL action going on today (and tonight)!
I'm not a big football fan. To me, it's 3 hours divided into 1 hour of "play," one hour of time between "play," and about 1 hour of commercials. And for the 60 minutes of "play," there's probably only 10 minutes of real action. (And 50 minutes of players making plans in secret.) Sorry if I've offended any football fans, but this is a hockey site after all! :)
I will watch the Grey Cup though, because it's the Canadian thing to do! By the way, for those hockey fans in Vancouver, what's the mood like there? Is there a lot of excitement about the Grey Cup, especially with the home team playing?
(Sorry hockey fans to bring up football on a hockey site!) |

Posted - 11/24/2011 : 12:02:51 today is not Thanksgiving Eve, it is Thanksgiving Day, which is why there are no games today. Thanksgiving is pretty big in the US, I think bigger than Christmas.
Friday is just "Black Friday", which is a huge shopping day (think Boxing Day here). Thats why there are games Friday |

Posted - 11/24/2011 : 10:12:18 I found this interesting as well and can't recall if this is the norm? Why not sched a couple of games with Canadian teams? I know they prob don't wanna have to compete with the NFL for TV ratings tonight in the US, but it's not as though they're giving them a few days off to go home and celebrate (the US players).
Cal / Edm and a Mtl / Tor (or throw in Ott?) game would be nice to see tonight? Oh, and let's not forget the Jets. |
