How many of you expect to see a thread dedicated to Ovechkin? While there have been countless articles pointing to Ovy as the culprit behind Boudreau's demise, there is another captain who is underachieving much more than number 8, whose coach got canned on the same day. I talk, of course, of Eric Staal.

Staal, and his hurricanes, have been abysmally bad this year. Staal is on pace for around 12 goals and 30 points, and on this pace will finish -236 (all numbers approximate). This guy was signed to a massive contract, has always produced 80+ point seasons and isn't old. Would Maurice have been fired if Staal was even close to his regular output? Doubtful. Skinner has been insane, and a producing Staal would have kept them from the basement.

However, because the North American media loves to hate on Russians and gives Canadians the benefit of the doubt, Staal is simply 'in a slump' while Ovechkin is deliberately suiciding his team and coach. Typical. Who would you rather have on your team right now?

Stall and Ovie r really good players yet they do have a tendency to screw up the team if they don't perform to there expectations.

tough one. I'd rather have Ovechkin...from 3 or 4 years ago. Today's OV produces as much as Staal (I'm assuming that Staal will get back to his PPG production soon enough), but has leadership qualities, defensive abilities, and all around game that OV does not have.

If OV is going to continue to try (but fail) to be this "all around player", I'd rather have Staal.

Great topic, and an interesting point, which I mostly agree with.

Answer: I'd rather have Ovechkin (if we're not taking salary into consideration).

I don't think Ovechkin pushed out Boudreau at all, myself . . . quite the opposite - I think Ovie KEPT him there after last year's ignoble exit, and after the year before that. If Ovie had wanted Boudreau gone at ANY point after those disappointments . . . it would have been done.

I don't think Staal got rid of Murice either, but your point is well made. We all know the inherent suppositions and pseudo-racism against the Russian and europpean players.

BTW, my top coach killer of all-time? Mario Lemieux.
