Posted - 01/30/2012 : 19:28:59 I read an article today regarding Bettman and shootouts. So it got me thinking if you guys think anything should be changed about the shootout and how it is executed. 5v5 OT for 10 mins, 4v4 for 5 mins THEN a shootout? Continuos OT? No shootout at all? Or how about no points for the loser?
I feel like something should and will be changed; or tweaked to make the game end a little better if it goes into extra time.

Posted - 02/02/2012 : 03:02:53 I enjoy watching shootouts; face it, some of the best dekes and goals you see. I just don't like the winner of a shootout getting the same two points as the team who won a hockey game.
Did you hear about the retired proctologist? He spent 40 years saying "what's a place like this doing in a girl like you?" |

I would rather see the OT extended to 10 minutes and then call it a tie with one point going to each team. It is highly likely that a goal would be scored in a period of 10 minutes, 4 on 4. Another impact the shootout has is on the 5 minute overtime. How often do watch a team play the OT without much offensive push as they are trying to not lose rather than trying to win?? The opportunities created by knowing there is no safety net of shoot out should mean more games end with a winner and a loser. Also, how the strategic opportunities. Let's say a team gets a penalty in overtime. Does the opposition coach pull the goalie and make it a 5 on 3 advantage to push for the win???
I like the entertainment of a shoot out but there are more exciting ways to end a hockey game.
On that front, does anyone know where to find a stat which shows what percentage of overtimes were decided during 4-on-4 OT pre-shootout, compared to 4-on-4/shootout? Just curious. |

Posted - 02/01/2012 : 11:14:20 Hate, hate, hate the 3 point rules with shootouts. Such an over-inflation of point totals and gives a deceptive view of parity in the NHL.
Hate, hate, hate that a great 65 minutes of hockey is brought down to a breakaway contest.
Love, love, love watching the shoot out and the energy it creates.

Posted - 02/01/2012 : 09:09:15 I don't know if I'm really in favour of awarding 3 points to a team in any game...but honestly, it makes sense. The scenerio you listed, with 3 points for a regulation win, 2 points for an OT/WO win, and 1 point for an OT/SO is probably the fairest. Or even possibly 3 points for an regulation/OT win, and 2 for the shootout victory. |

Not the best worded poll ever . . . your initial qustion asks "do you like the shootout?", and yet in the end I have to vote yes, because it's "yes I think something needs to change" . . .
Let me clarify:
I hate the shootout in hockey, and want it out of the NHL. I think we should return back to the perfectly good system that was used earlier . . . where there are ties during the regular season.

So here ya go Slozo, I completely and utterly agree with you. 3 point games skew the results, and ties add to the rivalries of teams. I am OK with the 4 on 4 in OT, but to me some rivalries just aren't the same as they used to be and I think ties add to the intensity.
Sorry, that was me. |

Posted - 01/31/2012 : 21:55:10 I'm fine with the shootout - its one way to end a game, and is entertaining. I wish the Canucks were better at them though - Lu truly sucks in the shootout.
However, one thing that I do not want to change - 4 on 4 OT, I think its great. Always exciting, lots of chances. I'd like to see it implemented for the playoffs as well. |

Posted - 01/31/2012 : 21:51:57 Its not fair when some games produce 2 points and others 3 between two teams. Make it always 3 like in olympics: 3 for regulation win, 2 + 1 to OT winner and loser respectively. Or get rid of overtime and allow ties. |

Posted - 01/31/2012 : 07:14:23 Shootouts IMO suck as it draws 60 min of hockey into 2 min of breakaways. If shootouts are the be all to end all, why ain't it in the playoffs? 'Nuff said. |

Posted - 01/31/2012 : 06:21:52 I was dead set against the shootout prior to it being implemented post-lockout. I've warmed up to it considerably though, to the point I don't want to see it go. I'd have no problem with the league either extending overtime to 10 minutes, or even having 5 minutes of 3-on-3 if the game isn't settled during the 5 minute 4-on-4. But no way would I want the NHL to go back to having tie games.
As for the playoffs, I hope the shootout NEVER finds a place in them! |

Posted - 01/31/2012 : 02:52:56 the 3 point game has to go. they call it parity, but it's far from it, just a bunch of teams sneaking through with 1 point games.

Posted - 01/30/2012 : 21:05:54 I love it. I really feel like it's the perfect way for a scoreless game to end. It does sometimes end up feeling like one team got cheated out of the win, but a game can't go on longer then 65 minutes of hard playing. Especially in the case of back to back games, it's way too gruelling.
If they get rid of the shootout people will start playing more ties more often like they did back in the pre-lockout days.
