18 SECONDS - 23 SECONDS

HE CARRIES IN, DEFENCE on Chicago steals it from him and SHOOTS IT, it goes to the EDmonton player and he scores.

THAT IS NOT AN ASSIST. Falsified

Exactly how do you come to this conclusion?? The puck is poke checked away and then batted away by a 2nd player. But at no time did Chicago gain possesion of the puck, therefore, the play is still alive(since the puck went right to Whitney). Hence the assist given to Gagner.
I think it may be you who is the rookie.

It's refreshing and funny to have good, satirical responses to topics like this guys . . . but try and keep it clean as well.

And guest 8465? When one is trying to say "you are", it shortens to "you're".

All that being said . . . I have to agree - very weak assist given. Would there have been more of an uproar on this had it been the 8th point that night for Gagner? Sure. Is it a huge deal for me as a hockey fan, knowing it came on Gagner's 3rd point in the 2nd period? Not really.

I didn't see anyone clearly gain control? A poke and slap away from gagner went to whitney and scored. Looks like a broken play to me but i may be a little bias cuz how much this kid needed a night like this.

Obviously being one of your aforementioned rookies, I am certainly gald you pointed this out, I must be a lemming, because silly me, I believed the other, oh, I don't know, thousands of people that didn't catch that!

Hurry powers that be, strike Gagner's name from the record books, get all the media outlets to retract their obviously erroneous reporting!

Make sure to give the thanks to the anonymous guest poster who caught what you all missed, cause nothing says authority like anonymity!

I think there is a bridge missing something somewhere.

Yup, should not have been an assist and I think they would have taken it away if what followed didn't happen. That was not a deflection to whitney, it was poked off Gagners stick and then shot to whitney. It was not a broken play and deflected to Whitney. Whitney (unassisted).

There is nothing in the rules that say no assist is given if a player from the opposing team touches the puck before the goal is scored. Specifically, rule 78.3:

"When a player scores a goal, an “assist” shall be credited to the player or players taking part in the play immediately preceding the goal, but no more than two assists can be given on any goal. Each “assist” shall count one point in the player’s record. Only one point can be credited to any one player on a goal."

"the play immediately preceding the goal" can be a broken play. Assists are awarded by the official scorekeeper, and each goal is generally reviewed for accuracy and amendments are made if warranted. It seems that the official scorekeeper felt that Gagner was part of the play preceding the goal.
