So iwas originally going to make this about lupul only but why limit it to one player.

What do you think would be new contracts for the free agents this year will be?

I think burke will try to sign lupul for a three year deal at around 4 mill per season.

I dont know what other free agents there are this season so i dont want to name any others lmao.

I believe Lupul should get something around 4.5millions per year for 4 years. Connolly got 4.75millions per with his three best seasons at 65 pts, 55 and 47. Erik Cole in MTL got 4.5 mil. for 4 years and Lupul has similar points production so that range of figures makes sense. And it would be a deal for the Maple Leafs.

so here is a link to UFA s at the end of this season.

ROFL i am epic nub lol i forgot to link the site oops http://capgeek.com/free_agents.php?year_id=2012&team_id=-1&position_id=-1&fa_type_id=2

i am surprised by some like Brent johnson. back up in PIT
Nabokov
Harding from MIN

this could be a good year for goalies in the market.
I could see Tampa paying big a goalie
and according to this list the leafs will stop paying jeff finger 3.5 mil to play minor league hockey ROFL about time.
but lots of decent names this year
i could see johnson geting a nice contract at the least 1.5 mil per season would be a nice upgrade from his current 600,000

Speaking of mouhahahahaha! What a joke!!! No way that Lupul is worth or gets $6.5 million. If he is not a UFA this off-season than it will depend on his performance next season. If he has 2 seasons of say 70+ points, then people can start talking about the $5 million/yr or slightly higher salaries. With the exception of this season, Lupul at $4.25 million was a pretty big over-payment. He has produced a lot closer to a $3 million player up until this season. Comparing a couple of Leafs, Lupul has been closer to a Clarke MacArthur kind of producer than a Phil Kessel kind of producer and MacArther got $3.25 million.

As far as Komisarek's contract, I wouldn't say that Burke overpaid at the time. Not at all. Other players in Komisarek's wheel house were getting the same deals. The problem is that Burke overpaid, it was that Komisarek regressed. He has not played anywhere near as well with the Leafs as he did with the Habs.

Let's be clear on the difference between overpaying for a player and a player underperforming. They are not one and the same.

There is a difference between signing an RFA and a UFA. Yeah sure MacArthur got 3.25M - but as an RFA he had few options available to him other than arbitration. Lupul will be UFA, which puts Burke at the mercy of the open market. You're right about Komisarek - Burke paid what the market was bearing for that kind of player at the time. If Lupul finishes this contract with back-to-back 30+ goal and 70+ point seasons, as a 29 year old power forward, what will the market be for that? I'm guessing its more than 4M per year.

However, I have to agree that 6.5M is less than likely. In order to command that sort of money, Lupul would have to elevate his game by another factor - ie, greater than PPG over multiple years. He would have to touch 90+ points this year and next, and even then he might be too late in his career to see that value.

C'mon Beans, next you're gonna tell me Gomez isn't worth his 7+ million dollar cap hit!

I was unaware of 2 things. First, i didn't know Lupul was making that much already (i'd agree, overpaid, until this year) and second, i assumed with the question from the OP that his contract was ending. I prob should have known better since his name hasn't been thrown around the potential FA's coming available at the dealine chat!

All bets are off and i'm guessing BB will take his chances next year and try to sign him part way through and the dollar amount will depend on his performance over the first half of next season.

P.S. : I would say Burke can overpay for some players (Komisarek 4,5M $/year for 5 years!!! MOUHAHAHA!!!!!!)

I think it's a bit early to talk about Lupul's contract.

According to Cap Geek, he's not a free agent until after the 2012-2013 season. He still has another season at $4.25 million, and while Burke may try to sign Lupul before he enters the last year of his contract, he's going to have to ante up to do so.

I think it will take around $4.5 million a season, and a multi-year deal to get Lupul's attention, but if not, Lupul might enter the 2012-2013 season without a contract renewal.

Would he turn down $4 million a year in a multi-year deal to risk going the UFA route? It depends on his confidence and belief that this season is not an anomaly, and it also depends on how much he likes playing in Toronto.

My guess is that Lupul doesn't get re-signed by the end of this season, because I agree with the assessment that Burke doesn't usually overpay his players, and with Lupul, I think it will take more money that Burke is willing to pay (at least right now) to sign Lupul.

Beans15 Posted - 02/10/2012 : 10:57:42
Let's not forget that Brian Burke has never been known as a GM who overpays for anything. He would rather see players leave than pay them more that what he thinks they are worth.

Lupul will not get $5 million from Burke or anyone else.
Alex116 Posted - 02/10/2012 : 10:46:52
I agree Beans, too many guys have career years then vanish. While he's prob getting more ice time than he has in the past having played on some deeper offensive teams and using it to prove his worth, a single year at these numbers isn't likely to warrant a 5mil contract from BB! They could go the route of a shorter deal if Lupul figures he could prove for another year + that he can keep up the pace? Then he could look long term?
Beans15 Posted - 02/10/2012 : 10:01:25
I don't think Burke would be luck to get Lupul for 3yr-$4 million. He is having a career year, no doubt about it. But he is also a player who has played on some good teams and on some good lines and has cracked 50 points twice and never more than 30 goals. After 500 NHL games too.

$4 million is about right for Lupul. Maybe up to $5 million a season in a deal that averages around $4 million. I don't think he gets anything more than that from Burke and would not get much more than that as a UFA either.

I'm hoping Karlsson gets inked for 10 years at 4.5-5mil a year. Limited NTC after 3 years.

so just make it about Lupul then.

I think Burke would be tremendously lucky to get Lupul for 4M a year over 3 years. I think he's looking at 5M per.
