Is there one? Undrafted and in his first 5 games leads his team to wins. Scoring a goal a game pace and 1.5 points a game average (hockey equivalent to what he is doing in BB). |

I thought right away of Thomas as well. Maybe not the same high level of immediate impact, but still a strong impact and similar story:

Well, Lin is already past the "one or two game impact" stage.
I'd have to go back and research the first 10 games for Dino Cicarelli to see if that comparison might fit, but that's about as close as you might come.
I don't think Teemu is a good comparison, as at least one other team was willing to put out a pretty hefty money offer for him, which Winnipeg had to match.
We are literally talking about a situation where, in the NHL, you'd have an undrafted player get called up do to a huge rash of injuries, then proceed to score at a clip that was like a top ten player in the league . . . for the first 5, 10 games, all the while leading your marginal/non playoff team to wins each time. He's also had a couple of buzzer beaters for the win in there too, so it'd be like having two O/T goals in there as well.
It's pretty phenomenal stuff, and would be nearly impossible to replicate, I'd think.

I think in the game of Hockey, especially at the NHL level, it's unlikely you'd find a guy who came onto the scene and had an immediate impact like Lin. Alex Burrows has a great "undrafted" story (esp for a d-bag eh Beans  ) but it wasn't immediate in the way Lin has caught fire!
Nah the comparable in the NFL would be Kurt Warner. Grocery bag clerk to QB for the Greatest Show on Turf.
You would think that it would happen in hockey and football more often. So many players on a team. So many roster positions. A kid could have been looked over. I would say there are no basketball equivalent.
I mean didn't Brunstrom have immediate impact? Then after that hat trick, where is he now? I hope Lin doesn't Brunstrom. |

Funny, while not hockey, i heard a comparison to Superbowl winning WR, Victor Cruz. A very similar story really, especially coming to a team like the Giants who were already pretty deep at the position!
The thing with Lin is, how long can it last? Is this kid gonna be an all star going forward, or is he just a flash in the pan? Time will tell.

Yeah. The player has to be undrafted and all scouts thought he wasn't good enough to play (the kid only played because the Knicks were desperate) and in his few games is playing like a superstar. Marty St-Louis didn't do so hot when he first started.
Didn't know Dino Ciccarelli was that good even in his rookie year. Wow. I think we'll have to compare Jeremy Lin to Dino. |

Interesting, thanks for that. I can only imagine the impact he'd have had on Calgary! Crazy some of these things we can look back at and say "what if....?". |

WPG drafted him in 88, but played in Finland for the next 2 years after that - I believe there was a problem getting him signed to a contract in Winnipeg, and had he not signed a deal in 92 Winnipeg would have lost him and he could enter the draft again, something to that effect.
Calgary gave him an offer sheet for the 92-93 season, which Winnipeg was forced to match or they would lose him for sure. They grudgingly matched it, and then were probably pretty happy about it in the end. |

The OP would have to confirm, but i was thinking more along the lines of someone who had an immediate impact on the game after going undrafted, unsigned or whatever.
If that's the case, Selanne would be the best although he was a top 10 pick? His immediate impact is the only thing that i can see as bettering what Lin is doing. Of course, we need to give Lin more than 7 games!
Ciccarelli is a good one too as he was pretty much a PPG player from the get go!
Nuxfan, when did Calgary offer him a contract? How did that work if Winnipeg eventually drafted him? |

Tim Thomas, going from journeyman playing all over the world to 2x Vezina winner and Playoff MVP comes to mind.
Other great undrafted guys: Rafalski, St. Louis was mentioned, Danny Boyle and how about Niemi. |

Dino Ciccarelli. Undrafted. Immediate impact for the Stars when they made it to the finals losing to NYI.
Ed Belfour. Undrafted, starts 74 games for Chicago wins the Calder.
Peter Statsny. Though highly touted and everyone knew he had skill. He was never drafted because of the Iron Curtain transfer issues. 109 points in 77 games as a rookie. Not quite comparable as Lin since he was a known quantity just didn't think he would defect. But his impact and scoring pace sure is similar to Lin.

A pretty big Homer response but I think it fits nonetheless.
Daniel Alfredsson was picked in the 6th round of a draft never expected to really stick in the NHL. Even he thought he'd be back in Sweden after a season or two at the most. He won the Calder that year and now he's still putting up numbers at 39 and might even have another year left in him.
Not quite the same as Lin, but all I could think of. |

Martin St. Louis was never drafted, and he now is a cornerstone in the Lighting franchise. Thats about as close as I can think at the moment. |
