Posted - 03/05/2012 : 09:54:27 In another thread someone asked if anyone caught CBC's production of the "Grapes of Wrath."
I didn't, but I definitely caught the "Wrath of Grapes" (Coach's Corner) on Saturday night, for which longtime Leafs fan, Don Cherry, gave it to Brian Burke and the Leafs.
Cherry has been quite critical of the Leafs this season (and Brian Burke in particular), and as Cherry alleged in his tirade, he accused Burke of going to see Cherry's bosses to have him fired because of comments he's made on Coach's Corner. That's quite an accusation!
Cherry then went on to chastise Burke for having no players from Ontario in the Leafs line-up, apparently the only NHL team without players from Ontario. (Some teams have as many as 6, 7 or 9 players from Ontario on their roster.) I'm not sure of the relevance, except it can sometimes help sell seats to have the local homegrown talent on the ice, but the Leafs (and most Canadian teams) do not need a lot of help selling seats.
It's clear Cherry and Burke don't like each other, and if Cherry's accusations are true, Burke is offside for complaining to the CBC about Cherry. On the other hand, Cherry may also be offside, especially if he's using his time on Coach's Corner to perpetuate his personal agenda and dislike for Burke.
I think Cherry's reaching with the "Where are the players from Ontario?" question. Roster decisions should be made by skill and talent, not birth certificates.
Getting back to the CBC production, I have no plans to watch it (I saw the trailers, and I couldn't get past the marginal acting), but if you want to get a good idea of what goes on at HNIC, etc., you should read Ron Maclean's book "Cornered." It's a very good read, and interestingly, Don Cherry wrote the forward for Maclean's book. Despite appearances otherwise, Ron and Don get along together very well. |

Posted - 03/13/2012 : 06:59:38 Meanwhile The Habs and the Leafs remain the 2 favourite teams ACROSS Canada. Whenever either team plays in another Canadian building...and sometimes south of 'the border'...they have plenty of fans in attendance.
[that is no longer true in Winnipeg mind you...but it certainly was the first time around]

Posted - 03/12/2012 : 15:03:06 Just an update on the Cherry-Burke saga. As noted in the article which appears on the home page of this forum, Burke denies that he tried to get Cherry fired.
Interestingly, the article goes on to state that according to the Globe and Mail, "a meeting between CBC and the NHL board of governors got heated over two main issues brought forth by representatives of the Canadian teams. The first issue was Cherry's criticism of the Leafs' management and coaching. The second was that Hockey Night in Canada is too focused on Toronto." (By the way, this meeting took place during the all-star game weekend.)
So one complaint was that the CBC focuses too much on the Leafs (must have come from the representatives of the other Canadian teams), while the other complaint was that Cherry was picking on the Leafs too much. (This complaint must have come from the Leafs.)
The Leafs shouldn't concern themselves with what Cherry (or other commentators) have to say about their team. So what if Cherry (or anyone else) criticizes management decisions, or makes comments about the coaching!
The Leafs should be happy they get us much media coverage as they do, and they should also recognize that it may not always be positive, but bad press goes with the territory! |

Posted - 03/06/2012 : 10:26:32 I believe Cherry was responding to Burke saying that every time an Ontario kid shows up at the ACC to play the Leafs...that kid / man plays his tail off thus putting the Leafs in a tougher spot competition wise.
So...in Don's bumbling, stumbling [I can hardly speak the language properly] style...he was merely pointing out that the problem has been created by the Leafs. ie: Don't wanna face ALL of these 'homegrown' talents? Then GET SOME stupid.
Wrath of Grapes is indeed the show title. It provides some inside info BUT...it really should have been shown either 2 nights back to back or all at once. I went to check part 2 last night only to discover that it ain't on again 'til next Sunday. THAT is NOT good programming.

Posted - 03/06/2012 : 05:22:04 I know it is off topic but did Shepsky just call Luongou one of the greatest goalies of all time. In the same sentence as Roy and Brodeur at that. I am surprised Reimer and the montster aren't listed as well. |

Posted - 03/05/2012 : 17:10:58 Just throwing it out there, that the CBC production is called "The Wrath of Grapes" not "The Grapes of Wrath" which was the name of the book that CBC is punning with the name of their documentary.
As for the rant of grapes on coach's corner, I think Cherry is just losing his mind a little in this little battle between him and Burke, He is trying to make a valid point, just not making a whole lot of sense doing it. I am from Ontario, I am not the world's greatest hockey player, just being born here does not make you a better choice for an NHL team, however, this whole country does have a fantastic development program for young hockey players, and people are really enthusiastic about our young hockey teams. This is why a LOT of great hockey players come from ALL ACROSS this country. Toronto's problems can't be solved just by adding players from Ontario, and as nuxfan pointed out, I'm glad the Ontario players we had on our roster are gone. If you look at the Leafs roster they do have a fair bit of Canadian guys, and some of their best guys to, Lupul, Lombardi, Phaneuf (not best captain, but still a good player) People, especially Grapes, are saying Burke is assembling team USA, but there are more Canadians than Americans, and some of the Americans are their best guys to like Kessel and Gardiner. As far as Don Cherry's rant goes, as mentioned before I would look at a player's skill before what their birth certificate says. And also maybe Don Cherry should look at some of the talent that comes OUTSIDE of Ontario, in fact some of the best goaltenders of alltime have been from Quebec, names like Roy, Brodeur, Luongo, Quebec leads the way in training and developing goaltenders, as this article states below. (It's a few years old but still applies)

anywas, sorry to go on a little rant here, but I think that Toronto's real problem is not getting more players from Ontario, I think everyone can agree that goaltending is a real issue for the buds, perhaps Burke (and even Cherry for that matter) should actually look further East than my home province, and look towards La Belle Province, oui?? |

Posted - 03/05/2012 : 13:48:55 The Leafs had plenty of Ontario players: Kyle Wellwood, Carlo Colaiacovo, and Matt Stajan come to mind. No doubt the Leafs would be in the playoffs with them in the fold
Honestly, Don Cherry knows a few things about hockey...but his overall credibility continues to go down with stuff like this. |

Posted - 03/05/2012 : 11:06:06 Yeah, to me, it's just more "sidshow Bob" antics from Cherry, just trying to incite a great and vitriolic debate. Nothing more, nothing less.
I won't even get drawn into it.

Posted - 03/05/2012 : 10:24:37 This topic seems to have 2 different talking points.
I will deal with one of them swiftly. I didn't watch the first Cherry movie and won't watch this one. I have no value to watching anything on CBC other than HNIC and maybe a little Dragon's Den.
To the Cheery vs Burke war. Firstly, Don Cherry is a complete meatball for calling our Burke for not having anyone from Ontario on his team. That was just dumb. However, Don Cherry always has and always will get paid for his opinion. He doesn't have to sugar coat it for anyone. If Burke doesn't like it when Cherry slags the Leafs, suck it up.
Think how many people Burke would have to get fired for no one in the media to beat up on the Leafs???
Frankly, quit cryin Burke. Win some games and the media can't say crap. |
