Apparently it's a rule (not sure if that's what it's actually referred to as?), but until last night's Canucks / Kings game, i don't recall seeing it called? I believe it was Kyle Clifford who was racing in after a puck directed on goal when Luongo covered it and Clifford slammed on the brakes (with a defender tight to him) causing Luongo to get "snowed" pretty badly. If this is a blatant / completely intentional move to do such, i could see a penalty being called, however in this case, i thought it was a poor penalty call. Ray Ferraro, upon reviewing it, said Clifford could have veered off to the right easily enough, however, i disagree. He was coming in pretty quick and i can only imagine the consequences if he tried to go right, slipped and crashed into the goalie? I guess this could have happened with him stopping too, but in such a quick foot race, i think it's a weak call.
I shouldn't be surprised, the reffing was pretty poor in the 1-0 game including Booth being called for a questionable "holding the stick" and Penner getting burned for a goalie interference penalty where Salo had already knocked Luongo off his feet and another dman then pushed Penner into him?
Hopefully we see some better reffing when the playoffs roll around, but that was some costly calls against the Kings who are fighting for a playoff spot! |

A penalty for "snowing" the goalie? Really? Maybe when a player is on the ice blocking a shot and gets some snow, we should call that too. This penalty should only be called if it happens in Live play, nor on a puck cover...... sheeeesh. |

Exactly statman! If a guy is coming in at "cruising speed", has not chance at a puck that the goalie easily is first too and covers it, then decides to "snow" him, fine, penalty! But, and i'm not sure if you saw the one i'm talking about, this was not a very good call. Clifford was flying in and had a shot at the puck. He was "sportsmanlike" enough to not jab his stick at it as it was covered and still got 2 for the snow job!!! |

I like the idea of calling players for giving "snow jobs" and yes unsportsmanlike is the correct call, but I would agree that this was quite likely unintentional. I think it needs to be pretty obvious if you're going to call that, particularly in a playoff race when penalty calls seem to be at a premium. |
