Haha I would make a case that Lou IS at least top 10 in the league but that's not the point of this thread so I digress.
Between Luongo and DiPietro there is absolutely no comparison whatsoever. One has been to game 7 of the cup final and won an Olympic gold medal to go along with a modest number of vezina nominations and a Jennings trophy, while the other one can't stay healthy and has made the playoffs 2 maybe 3 times and has never made it out of the first round.
It might not be fair to blame DiPietro for the Isles lack of success but he could do a lot to help them out if he actually played more that 12 games a year (his average GP from 2008/2009 -2011/2012)
Overall a pretty boneheaded series of moves by Mad Mike |

Posted - 04/06/2012 : 10:14:56 Ok Chara and a 1st round pick which ended up being Spezza for a 70-80 point a year player who scores 30-40 goals a year, and a hart candidate on a team which wasn't great at that time. Chara at that point in his career was a beast, but not an allstar. Frankly I thought NYI got the deal during this trade as Ottawa was under the gun to make something happen to what most people thought was a non playoff team. Yashin had great upside, but a bad contract history of sitting out when he felt he wasn't getting payed at his talent level. NYI solved that early. Who knew a skate would cut this guy up and down his arm and take him out for more than a year. I dont think it was the worst contract ever, maybe the worst return on a contract post signing.quote: Originally posted by The Duke

This guy was an horrible GM. Too many bad trades to list.
One from memory was trading away O.Jokinen and R. Luongo in a package deal.....think he got M. Parish and O. Kvasha
In another move i think he traded away Z. Chara and a 1st rd pick, ( which turned out to be J. Spezza ) for Alexei Yashin.
Then signed A. Yashin to a 10 year...90 million dollar contract.
This guy was a bad joke for a GM.

Posted - 04/06/2012 : 10:03:40 We're getting a little bit off topic, but Alex makes a good point about the Penguins taking Fleury first overall in the 2003 draft.
Florida actually had the first pick, but they traded it to Pittsburgh, also giving up the 73rd pick (Daniel Carcillo). In return, Florida got the 3rd pick (Nathan Horton), 55th pick (Stefan Meyer), and Mikael Samuelsson.
As I recall, Florida was looking for a power forward, and they already had Luongo. (And they had haunch Pittsburgh would take Fleury, leaving Eric Staal or Nathan Horton available with the 3rd overall pick.)
I still think taking a goalie first overall is risky (riskier than selecting the top ranked 18-year-old at an other position), and recognizing the importance of this position, it's telling that only three goalies have ever been taken with the first overall pick in the entire 50 year history of the draft.
Aside from Dipietro and Fleury, the last (and only) time it happened was back in 1968 when Montreal "wasted" the first overall pick by taking Michel Plasse.
Getting back to the subject matter at hand (Mike Milbury), I wish he would take his edge to a ledge! :)

Posted - 04/05/2012 : 23:40:23 Couldn't agree more that Milbury made a bunch of ridiculous deals. Some were so bad that i don't even think the Dipietro pick is in his top 5 worst moves!
Also, to the guest who said he/she would never pick a goalie #1 overall.......if you really need a goalie and know the best one won't be around by your next pick, i don't see a prob with it, assuming obviously that the guy was very highly touted. MA Fleury went #1 overall a few years after DiPietro and he's often referred to around here as Canada's next Olympic starter. Not too shabby! |

Posted - 04/05/2012 : 19:26:38 I would really like to hear from the voters (5 at this point) who really like Mike Milbury's "edge."
As far as Milbury selecting Dipietro with a first overall pick, it's easy to second guess now, but I don't understand using a first overall pick to select a goalie. Never have, never will!
It's hard enough to forecast the future prospects of an 18-year-old hockey player, but goalies are in a category of their own. I would never pick a goalie with a first overall pick.
And getting back to Milbury as a GM, Beans is right. The Dipietro selection on it's own is not a grandiose blemish, but Milbury made enough other bad moves to put him in a category of being a lousy GM. |

Posted - 04/05/2012 : 18:27:40 Are we not a bit smarter than this??I am not saying that Millbury was wise in passing on Heatley or Gaborik but DePietro was not that far of a bad pick at the time. I recall he was at least a top ten pick!!,
I don't like the hindsight stuff. There were 7 picks in the top 20 that played less than 100 NHL games. And to bring up names like Lunqvist who was chosen in the 7th round, Visnovsky in the 4th, Martin in the 2nd round, and Liles in the 5th? I guess that means that every GM at the time who passed on Lundqvist over and over and over is a moron?
Think about it, Klesla went #4 overall, Raffi Torres went 5th. If this draft is a measure of a GM's worth there are a pile of GM's that completely sucked.
Take a look

fair enough. but milbury was the one with the first overall pick... he could have gotten:
gaborik, heatley, hartnell, orpik, williams, kronwall, ott, volchenkov, bryzgalov, lundqvist, vermette, schultz, martin, visnovsky, liles
it was a weak draft class overall but dipietro was a bad pick.

That is not a weak draft class. That is a strong draft class, at very least, a decent one. And I remember when he picked Dipietro . . . he thought he was being quite the groundbreaker, taking a goalie first overall. lol That did not work out well.
I mean, easy to second guess always, sure . . . but picking Dipietro was a total surprise pick at #1, I remember that much.
Leaving Gaborik and Heater there . . . ouch. If memory serves correct, Heater was picked by all to go #1 in that draft.
Dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb.

I'm old enough to remember him--he was a back-stabber who lost every fight he was ever forced to enter (check the old videos), which is why he picked a 12-year-old as his most recent opponent.
