This year's finalists: Chara, Iginla, Crosby
Past Winniers: Sundin (06-07), Chelios (07-08)

Does anyone else think this award is kind of odd, it's finalists and the winner are chosen by Messier alone. Yes he was perhaps the best NHL leader of all time (and some might say in any sport), but does that mean he should have full control of an official NHL award? I mean is his process for choosing the winner well documented, or does he just sleep on it..lol. What happens when he gets old and perhaps stops being really active in hockey, or if he dies, what happens when his hockey knowledge becomes limited.

Does this award have a shelf life... or will he pass on the choosing duties to the media, players, fans, or the next great leader (as if there is anyone who could take his place).

I'm just not sure if this one was well thought through.

Ok if its based on lifetime acheivement then Iggi is a winner. If its based on this years performance prior to the post season then Chara is a good candidate to win. If its based on this year including the playoffs, or if its simply a Trophie for us to create a controversy upon, then Crosby's as good a candidate as the rest.

Crosby won't win this award for one reason, no class. Throughout the finals he has reverted to childish antics when the Penguins are losing (slashing the legs of Cleary, Datsyuk etc.), complaining to the refs about calls not made when they touch him etc. If he was a true leader, he would shut up, and take the team on his back. Only problem with that is, the best player on the team is already doing that (Evgeni Malkin). Malkin is playing like a man-inspired, Crosby is playing average hockey right now. So to say he should win it because he's the poster boy of the NHL, crap!

Jerome Iginla is class, he hits, fights, and scores. He takes his game to another level in clutch situations. He doesn't cheap shot you and jump you off a face-off (Crosby), he looks for the toughest guy on your team and dukes it out to inspire his team. On most teams, if you touch the captain, the enforcer is coming for you. On the Flames, if you touch anyone, the Captain is coming for you!

Iginla gets it!

Why I would reply to someone who doesn't even know how to spell Jarome Iginla, I am not sure.

Your critique of Crosby is brutal. Did you even watch the Pen-Caps series, or were you out walking the dog on those nights.

No Crosby, no Cup. The Pens never make it past the first round.

Plus, find me some of these outrageous acts he has comitted against the Red Wings and the refs in the finals. Go ahead. Track them down and show me.

That slash/love tap on Zetterberg? If Zetterberg spent as much time scoring as he did diving in this series, the Wings would have won.

Yep...there's a new Captain Canada in town (or country I guess) and he goes by the name Iggy...seem as Smitty defected. I agree this award is Mess'ed up but none the less Iggy does deserves it. Crosby will get this award one day when he matures (he is missing the likes of Recchi and Roberts to lead him down the road of puberty).

While I agree you describe Iginla's game to a T, this was not his best year. There were times this year when Cammalleri, Phaneuf were the leader for this team and Jerome didn't look on his game.

I think this year, more then any, he actually had a solid supporting cast. He wasn't needed to win night in, night out. So we didn't focus on him that much. Before the Tanguay's, Cammalleri's and Jokinen's, who did he really have to play with? If this is a "lifetime achievement award" as one person said, then shouldn't Iginla get it? I mean he's accomplished more in the NHL then Chara or Crosby. All due respect Sid, you have Evgeni, Jerome had no one until this year, correct that, he had Craig Conroy **cough**....like I said, Iggy gets it!

Also, if he isn't Canada's captain next year, don't care who it is, Yzerman's got a few screws loose, Iggy deserves it more then anyone that can be put on that team...

Yup this award is Mess'ied up... The past two winners were Sundin and Chelios, Sundin did not take his team to the playoffs in 06-07 and Chelios has not really been an on-ice factor for some time (so where's the leadership factor). It's almost like the award is a lifetime achievement award or more precisely a life-time Bill Masterton award plus leadership minus the injuries generally associated with the BM award. If that's the case It'll probably go to Iginla.

I really think they have to rethink this award altogether.

All fine candidates but I still can't get my head around Crosby winning it over the likes of the other 2. But knowing how he is the face of the NHL now, like some one said earlier, he probably won't go home empty handed.

For my money I say Chara. Dominating D-man really grooming that young D corp in Boston. He anchored that Boston team to the presidents trophy.

Crosby is still pushing in the playoffs, this is not an award based on the playoffs. During the season Crosby was good but still show some childish charactoristics I would not want my children to emulate.

Iginla although a great leader and probably Captain of Team Canada 2010, did not seem as effective in his role this year.

By the way I would love to see a Bobby Orr award for most offensive defenseman in either the playoffs or regular season.

Didnt San Jose win the presidents trophy?

I guarantee Crosby gets it. It is the only award he can win this year and the NHL wont let their prize go home empty handed

There is no "I" in team, but there is an "M" and an "E".

I had no idea that it was only the Mess man choosing for this award . . . goes to show how much I care about awards. It certainly negates the legitimacy of it, for sure.

That being said, I predict Messier will choose . . . oh man, the more I think about this, the more retarded it is. All you have to be is a great friend of Messier, and he will choose you, or be the guy who Messier likes more. Really ridiculous to just have one judge and jury, no matter how great he was. I wouldn't want Gretzky or Lemieux being the sole judge on best offensive player, or Bobby Orr choosing best D-man. It just ain't right.

So, I will decline to choose - choosing gives it legitimacy.

I'll ignore it, like the Lady Byng.
