Well, last night was the awards ceremony in Las Vegas after it got moved from Toronto. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in moving the show that Las Vegas would give it more room to expand its year-end celebration of its players. Las Vegas, he said, would attract more fans and celebrities and make things more exciting for players honored as the best of the best.

Although he may have a point, I think that this is another snub to Canadian hockey. Apparently Toronto isn't good enough for an awards ceremony. I'm getting really sick of Bettman. How do the rest of you feel about this? Was the move to Vegas a solid decision or was it another snub against Canadian hockey?

The Burge is a beast! lol...but either way...CN Tower is where it's at! lol...8241, Russell Peters hosting the awards would be jokes, can you imagine making fun of Zdeno Chara? What about Sacha Baron Cohan hosting it? LOL

Other than that you're bang on about T.O. 3rd largest theatre culture in the world after NY and London. The city has 4 universities, 4 colleges. Is the most visited destination in Canada (18 million visitors/year), 5th largest city in N.A after Mexico City, NY, LA and Chicago... has more festivals and events than you can dream up. Definately capable of hosting an awards show...

ok enough of the T.O. commercial.

Isn't the Burge Dubai still under construction? :P lol...

But yes, Toronto is more then worthy of hosting the awards, and Beans is right, the NHL Awards are actually horrible! I say they get Russell Peters and Mike Myers to host it! That'd be funny :P

Guess you never watched the NHL Award Show before. It is easily the worst Pro Sports Award show. I would rather watch the Professional Dart Association Awards Show.

It really doesn't matter where it is, it's like watching paint dry. Simply boring.

(Did anyone else see the camera kind of focused on Lidstrom during the show's credits. I was making the joke to my wife that he must have thought the show wasn't over. He was still waiting for the presenters to call his name for the Norris. Funny)

Another great aspect of Toronto, even our street-meat is multicultural! :P haha

That singing chick was horrible. She sounded really bad, had no presence and had no rythm. Where does the NHL find those performers anyway.

Def Leppard put the Stanley Cup upside down.
The band for the All Star Game was just aweful
And now this!!!!

I think I know why they moved it to LV. They are really just still trying to sell the sport in that area. In Canada they don't have to do anything to sell the sport so they just bassically ignore us. What's too bad with this is that they don't pay tribute to their fans by ignoring great hockey cities that Canada as to offer. It's all about marketing in the U.S.

I think it should have a different city to host the awards year after year. Just like the All Star game. And it should never be in a city like Las Vegas where there's no NHL club. It should always be in a city with an NHL club.

Yet another supporting action that Bettman doesn't want Canadian hockey!

First off, how is Toronto not up to par to host the awards? It's one of the largest cities in North America (Much larger then Vegas in Sq. Miles and population) and considering the awards are held in our entertainment/theatre district, more then enough attractions for tourists, fans, celebs etc. Yes, Vegas is a gamblers paradise (also good for rub & tugs), but what does Toronto have to offer?

- World's largest free standing structure (CN Tower)
- State of the art stadiums
- #1 rated nightclub in N.A. (Circa)
- Pro teams for every sport!
- Beaches!
- Serious night-life, pub, bar or club-goers delight
- Theme parks, museums, art galleries, world class performing arts
- Little Italy, Greek-town, chinatown...pretty much the hub of multiculturalism
- also, hosts one of the largest film festivals in the world and hosts some of the biggest names in Hollywood!

- Home of the HOCKEY HALL OF FAME!!!!!

So...back on topic, no longer PR for the city of Toronto, why didn't we have the awards in Toronto? Because there's a couple more strip joints in L.V.?

You're damn right it's a snub against Canadian hockey. And from all accounts (bloggers, sportswriters, as I didn't see it) it was a boring, unglitzy affair that underwhelmed.

You know, by itself, it might not have been seen as a snub . . . but there are so many things that collectively have been done with negative effect towards Canada, that it makes one wonder what self-defeating agenda they have in store for the largest portion of REAL fans of the NHL.

First they hire a former lawyer with zero hockey knowledge who did a lousy job for the NBA to become the NHL commissioner . . . then, they move Winnipeg's team to a city in the desert . . . then they move Quebec City to Colorado . . . then they expand the league to a bunch of southern cities in the US without even the slightest consideration given to another team around Toronto or getting one back in Winnipeg or Quebec City. Then, a series of rule changes, the infamous glowing puck for american television viewers, adding the shootout and taking away tie games. Then when some of those new southern teams are doing lousy, Bettman and the NHL powers that be do everything in their power to stop movement of franchises to strong Canadian markets, while financially supporting these loser teams (and by loser, I mean very little fan support!). And now the awards ceremony changing venues.

The list could go on and on, and I know I have forgotten some things here . . . Bettman is a curse on the NHL, and I can only imagine my elation when he finally gets kicked to the curb.

Only through massive public support can we get corporate entities to latch onto movements like the Make It 7 thing to convince the American-run NHL to take notice of what Canadians want . . . because otherwise, we won't be catered to one bit.
