I think Markov is underrated. And his importance to the team and the pp is just unreal. Great vision, great passes and he almost plays a flawless game in his own end.

I don't see Shea Weber enough but I could have voted for him. Lidstrom was also considered. So Markov, Lidstrom and Weber.

Beauchemin right now is the MVDefenseman for the other teams. haha just kidding I shouldn't be picking on him. He'll pick up.

It took Chara till his 7th season (i think?) to get nominated for the Norris and with modest stats as well so maybe you're right, Wideman could be in the mix sooner than later? Having said that, i think a bigger obstacle for him than popularity, is Chara himself! Not likely to see two guys from one team nominated so he's gonna have to have a season that shines in comparison to his own team mate!

Personally, I think Wideman can pull that off. He's still a sleeper for most GM's, pools, or bar bets. So, he can still fly under the radar and surprise a few people again next year. Build on a very solid season last year. If he does, not crazy for him to touch 60 Points. Hopefully then people recognize his name...

Well Rambo, you'll be happy to hear, i picked up Wideman in one of my pools! However, this pool gives 2 points for goals by defensemen. Everything else is normal....You can also drop and add guys every month so if he sucks for any reason, i'm not stuck with him!

I say this year, it will be between Lidstrom, Chara and Green once again.

I agree with Beans to some extent, Shea Weber is excellent . . . but the problem is, he plays for a middling team in the backwoods of Nashville (figuratively speaking, of course). He doesn't get half the press that a player on Boston, Detroit or now Washington would get, and although it's not fair, that's the way life goes.

I say that for Weber to be included in the voting, he has to have something resembling Green's offensive numbers of last year, something that is so outstanding it can't be ignored. Who knows, he certainly has the talent to score 25 and get 70 points . . . but I just don't see it happening with the team he has in front of him right now.

Best Offensive Defenseman is Mike Green

Best Defensive Defenseman is Duncan Keith

Best overall defense still is Nick Lidstrom.

He is on the top of the mountain until someone knocks him off. Pronger and Neidermayer are still right behind him. Legitimately, I can see Shea Weber taking the top spot sooner than later. The guy really has no weakness in his game.
irvine Posted - 10/07/2009 : 16:29:42
My vote goes to the all mighty Chara. Not because he has been my favorite d-man since originally landing in Ottawa. But because the guy has skill. He hits, fights, has a hard shot, nice pass and strong leadership. What more do you want from a D-man. He also has the hockey sense it takes.

I can see a repeat.

Getting nominated is his toughest challenge simply because alot of nominee's are nominated based on popularity, admit it, or not. Let's compare Chara's stats, to Wideman's...

Zdeno Chara - 2008/2009 Stats:
GP 80 | 19 G | 31 A | 50 PTS | +23 | 95 PIM | 25+ Minutes per game

Dennis Wideman - 2008/2009 Stats:
GP 79 | 13 G | 37 A | 50 PTS | +32 | 35 PIM | Around 20 Minutes per game

So, you could argue that he had a Norris year last year...

If the Kessel for Kaberle trade goes through what a defence that would be for the B's. Chara, Wideman, Kaberle and Stuart. Almost as good as Calgary's.

Scratch Ference, Wideman though. He had a great year last year. You can argue a better year then Chara. So look for him to build on it.

What you said about the bomb actually Chara or Pronger would prefer as the bomb. They are both big and strong and plays the puck well.Mike Green is very good and talented too and yes he is good on the PP and is maybe Washingtons best dman but Chara and Pronger also be's out for almost every PP.

Chara got a huge slapshot(hardest in the NHL)and pronger also got a hard slapshot. As well Lidstrom should be added, he also got a good slapshot and makes the right choice with the puck.

Technically, Sheldon Souray has the hardest shot in the NHL. He set an unofficial record at the Oilers skills competition with 106.7 mph I beleive.

Well thats true but in the skills competition he didn't have the hardest shot, Chara did but I agree Souray did take the hardest shot but It wasn't in the skills competition.

Thats why the skills comp is BS, Souray didnt make the All-Star game, so that means that even though he officially recorded a harder shot he doesnt get credited for it.

CANUCKS RULE!!!

Souray was in the allstar game, he just didnt get as hard of a shot off there

Wideman or Ference will have a 60 point season and fight for the Norris? Yup, that seems reasonable. Announcing this years Norris finalists....Wideman, Ference, Chara and XXXXX....real reasonable indeed.

Wideman has a chance, Ference will not come close.

I pick Gonchar if he stays healthy.

green is, maybe there best defenseman? he is a 30 goal scorer, he hits, and he comes back to help out and does a good job at it too. Green IS there best defenseman and is in the top 5 of the caps most valuable players. also, Chara doesnt have the hardest shot in the NHL, Chad Kilger and Sheldon Souray have both hit over the 106 mph mark before, and chara bearly breaks 105

Of these three I think Chara will still stand tall (pun intended). Lidstrom is another year older (though I still expect him to be a top 5-10 dman). And Pronger may or may not work out in Philly, I think yes, but overall I'd say Chara is more effective.

A couple other guys might have career years or bounce back years too. Weber, Green, Keith, Bouwmeester, Markov, Campbell, Streit and Phaneuf could all be in the mix for Norris contention in 09-10. Zubov and Gonchar also used to be in that conversation, we'll see if they rebound from their injuries.
