Ok if you had to pick one goalie for your hockey pool out of these 10 who would it be:
Brodeur
Loungo
Ward
Mason
Fluery
Nabokov
Lundqvist
Kippursof
Varlamov
Thomas

This really depends on the scoring system of your pool. If the points are 1 for a win and 2 for a shutout, a goalie is not a good pick until the late rounds as you are maxing out at about 55 points. Many players in the league will get that or more.
However, if the point system is 2 or more for a win, one of the 5 elite goalies is a solid pick in around the 3rd round.
Consider that a goalie with 40 wins and even 4 shutouts would produce 88 points in a 2 for a win and 2 for a shutout system. If the scoring for skaters is 1 point for a goal and 1 point for an assist, a 40 win goalie is as valuable or more valuble than all but 17 skaters in the NHL!
Poolies, play wisely. If pool wieghts goalies heavily, getting your hands on an elite goalie is not a bad move. The best goalie(in wins) last year would have had 98 points compared to even the 10th ranked goalie who would have had 70 points.

As for shutout, If Brodeur stays healthy he should put up around 10 of them under Lemaire as coach. So this rises Brodeur value for pool, and you know he will play the games and get some wins.
So if you go by wins and shutout, this year I would say that Luongo, Kipprusoff, Nabokov and Brodeur are all excellent choices.
Fleury, Lundqvist and Ward are also very solid choices.
Thomas, Miller and Backstrom would follow.
I had a keeper pool and the points were 1 for wins and 2 extra for shutouts, Last year I had Brodeur and Fleury, but this year I decided to let Fleury go and keep Ovechkin, Backstrom, Getzlaf, Boyle and Brodeur because the point system was too low for goalies. That was a tough decision. |

Usually down the depth list and easier to pick up with out having to pay astronomically for the trade. Some times I consider trading down goalies from the top tier to tier 2 goalie and Defenseman/or Forward upgrade, because numbers are so similar from both tiers over the long term. If your league allows frequent trades/or Free agents you can usually pick up a hot goalie for cheap, thats how I picked up the 2 Masons mid season last year.

Luongo or Brodeur for me. To me its who plays the game well, reads the play, has the best save % and shutouts or win. Two of these goalies are the top 3 goalies in the NHL to me of what I've seen in 08-09.

Just to add for you poolies out there:
For pools that weight goals heavier especially, I never pick a goalie top two. The shutouts are just too difficult to predict, even for guys like Luongo and Brodeur, and getting a top notch goalie without the big reputation (see: Ward, Backstrom, Fleury) who may even finish in the top three in goalie points is the way I've gone.

No offence but brodeur,2nd pick would be Luongo,3rd pick would be thomas.thats the 3 top goalies i think you have listed there.But i would pick brodeur in a hockey pool.

For most of the hockey pools I am in, shutouts get an extra 3 points on top of two points for the win, and 1 of them gives 5. (yes, I am always in more than 1 hockey pool, I'm an addict!) So, the shutouts heavily weight the decision process, as just getting those 35-40 wins isn't enough. And, of course, it's the trickiest thing to predict, as even the best and most consistant - Brodeur, Luongo, Kipper, Nabakov, Backstrom (not on your list for some reason), Lundqvist, Ward, and Fleury - have their good years for shutouts and bad.
So, the best goalies for wins, last three years:
2008/09 - Kipper(45), Nabby(41), Ward(39), Lundqvist(38), Backstrom(37), Thomas(36), Fleury(35) *Luongo(33) in 54 starts, Brodeur(19) in 30 starts
07/08 - Nabakov(46), Brodeur(44), Kipper(39), Ward(37), Lundqvist(37), Miller(36), Giggy(35), Luongo(35) *Backstrom(33) in 57 starts
06/07 - Brodeur(48), Luongo(47), Fleury(40), Miller(40), Kipper(40), Hasek(38), Turco(38), Raycroft(37), Lundqvist(37), Giggy(36) *Backstrom(23) in 36 starts
For WINS, looking at consistancy, team strength and whether the goalie might be on a downward or upward trend - I'd rate the top five goalies as Kiprusoff, Nabakov, Luongo, Brodeur, Lundqvist.
Now . . . SHUTOUTS, the most unpredictable of stats, but the one that might make you or break you for goaltender poolie points:
08/09 - S.Mason(10), Luongo(9), Backstrom(8), Nabby(7), Rinne(7), C.Mason(6), Conklin(6), Ward(6), Vokoun(6), Brodeur(5), Miller(5), Thomas(5) . . . Fleury and Kipper with 4, Lundqvist with 3.
07/08 - Lundqvist(10), Leclaire(9), Nabby(6), Luongo(6), Ellis(6), Hasek(5), Biron(5), Legace(5) *Brodeur, Giggy, Backstrom, Ward, Fleury with (4)
06/07 - Brodeur(12), Hasek(8), Kipper(7), Nabby(7), Turco(6), Luongo(5), Backstrom(5), Lundqvist(5), Fleury(5) and a few more with 5.
Here is how I rate the best goalies for shutouts, taking into account this year's projected team defence strength in terms of shots allowed, consistency, and upward/downward trend: Luongo, Brodeur, Backstrom, Lundqvist, Nabakov, Fleury, Ward, Kipper
Putting those stats together, I'd rate the top goalies like this:
1. Luongo
2. Brodeur
3. Nabakov
4. Kiprusoff
5. Lundqvist
. . . with Ward, Fleury and Backstrom right behind.
Even putting in the possibility of very good seasons from the unproven goalies on your list - Mason (I assume Steve Mason of the Bluejackets), Varlamov and Thomas - I would still put both Mason and Thomas behind the top 5 risk-wise, with Varlamov being a real gamble.
Answer: Luongo

I am in a keeper league where my two goalies are Nabokov and Luongo. It works on a rotisserie system with Wins, Saves and Save Percentage. I paid a high price to get them via a number of trades that included moving Crosby, Kane and Cammileri. |

You can't lose between Nabokov, Kipper, Luongo, or Brodeur. All will have 40ish wins. Depending on the shut out piece, Luongo and Broduer will normally get more shut outs than the other two.
As long as you can get one of those 4, you are solid. My next choices would be Ward, Fleury, and Thomas.
Those are the 7 money guys. |

ok well it depends how the point systems work in the pool. in my pool i usually make it 5 points for a shutout and thats it. and then in other pools theres points for wins shutouts shootout wins and all that other stuff.
so right off the bat i know out of those 10 i wouldnt take varlomav because he only played in the playoffs last year, he looked good, but hes still inexperienced and isnt a proven number 1 goalie.
the same goes for mason. he was great last year but i still think hes a big risk to take as your first pick for goalies. i would wait to see how both these guys do this year before i would take them in a pool.
as for the rest of these guys, it pretty even with luongo and brodeur slightly ahead. again it depends how the pool works but i would have to say luongo would be my number one goalie |
