Posted - 01/22/2010 : 13:37:38 Was seeing as most topics have turned kinda bland lately with few exceptions, I thought what would make a good discussion.
My question, pick a team of recently retired players in there natural positions having 4 lines of forwards with an alternate, 7 defensman, 2 goalies. Players have to have retired in no more than 10 years prior, so as to narrow the list of players. I'd like to see teams which could compete in a 80 game season. |

ok here's the list with the 10 years rule so that way I wont have as many habs.
Robitaille - Lemieux - B.Hull Shanahan - Yzerman - Bure Roberts - Messier - Bondra Andreychuk - Sakic - Palffy Gilmour
Bourque - Coffey Stevens - MacInnis Leetch - Housley Murphy
Roy Hasek Joseph
There 7 who played for the Leafs haha. 5 who played more then 1 season.
Palffy? I guess he had his day. Figured him for a team B or C not the A class. Dont think he's got the hardware Bondra, Fedorov or Mogilny had.
The thing is I went with natural positions, and Fedorov was not on that list as he was a center. Maybe I could have put Mogilny that would have made one more Leaf player. haha
But yeah Palffy was really good but he was slow down with injuries and plus he was doing it by himself on Long Island and then in LA. Plus he had a point per game in 9 of his last 10 nhl seasons. 329 goals and 384 assists for 713 points in 684 games is not too shabby.
But I agree that the same could be said about Mogilny but really other then that, if you take out Jagr because he's still playing, there's not many right wingers better then Palffy who retired in the past ten years.
But I think Palffy is still playing in a league somewhere so I guess he wouldn't be eligible for this topic.
Edit : And Bondra was already right winging my third line.
It was just the 1st few players I could think of off the top of my head and your correct I missed Bondra on your list |

Orr - Harvey Potvin - Bourque Coffey - Stevens Robinson
Roy Hasek Plante
I'm aware that there's many players that are left off. I sure forgot a lot of players and them being at their natural position made it harder.
Here's a honourable mention to Brodeur and Lidstrom who would already be on this list. Also Ovechkin and Crosby I believe will be on this list at the end of their career.
Wow 7 Habs from a Leafs fan, impressive.

They will both be back. I'd throw them on my team if thats what we are deciding, but basically it is up to you. |

I know look at the first line I wrote. |

There is no "I" in team, but there is an "M" and an "E".
Gretzky retired prior to the 10 year period, same with Orr. Bondra between 1995 and 2002, I believe, scored more combined goals than anyother player during thoughs years so its not hard to fathom.
The reason Messier is not on my roster was his position was center and I couldn't bump another center to fit Messier. Lindros was the closest. This is probably one of the best class of retiring centers in a 10 year period.
Messier is second to only Gretzky in points, his leadership skills are some of the best there ever was, clutch guy and has the rings to prove it. He should be picked over all centers but especially Lindros .. but once again not my team it is yours. |

Bure - Lemeiux - Hull Robitaille - Messier - Roenick Shanahan - Sakic - Bondra Kurri - Yzerman - Fleury
MacInnis - Bourque Coffey - Stevens Murphy - Chelios (I know he isn't retired yet, and still could play in the NHL but I didn't want to have the same D as everyone else.)
