Posted - 07/05/2010 : 09:04:15 Slozo, agreed complete. If a team does not have a legitimate #1 keeper they better have one of the best defensive groups in the league to keep pace. Considering this finals, you were looking at 2 goalies that did their job but didn't really steal anything. However, you were looking at 2 of the top 5 defensive groups in the league in Chicago and Philly.
Let's face it, SJ's defensive core also took a step back losing Blake. He was slower than he used to be but still a very solild player. Looking at a group of Boyle, Vlasic, Murray, Wallin, Huskins, and Demers with Niittymaki as the keeper??
Wilson better keep looking because that's simply not good enough to win. |

Posted - 07/05/2010 : 07:40:25 Wow, definitely not 3 NHL calibre great starting goalies . . . actually, I see one guy is debateable as having been a proven starter, someone I would rate as C grade, maybe low B grade; one mediocre back-up; one propsect.
A step back in goal, and the Sharks I think they will feel it big time. If this is their starting line-up, I predict by Christmas they will have acquired or will be looking to get another real starter.
One finals with two B goalies and you guys throw out the importance of goaltending?!? You guys are crazy . . . as stated earlier by myself, even with a B goalie, you need the TOP defensive corps in the league to win the cup, nothing less than that will do. That says to me, that goltending is still the #1 most important position in the game today . . . as it was yesterday, and yesteryear.

However, with that being said, I don't mind the move by the Sharks. It's a big pay cut in net, going with the downgrade. And honestly, the overall ability of the team to me is better for it.
Able to keep Marleau and Pavelski, is what makes the cut worth it. Having a less talented goaltender in the NHL these days, seems to be the norm of success. Building your team from the front to back, seems to work best.

Posted - 07/02/2010 : 14:10:42 Jumbo , by NHL standards these are not three " good" goalies.
Sucess in the AHL means nothing, has staleck even played an NHL game? I would reserve any judgement on his caliber until he has a couple of starts under his belt. Plenty of goalies have had great ahl seasons than done nothing in the show.
Case and point, antero nittimaki, who, AHL and international heroics aside, has been spotty at best in the NHL.
And 7-5 isn't really that impressive of a record, especially on a team like the sharks.
In response to your question, however, I would say right now the sharks have nittimaki penciled in as a starter, however greiss could win the spot in camp. It's highly unlikely that staleck plays for the sharks this season, unlikely, but not impossible. Regardless of who starts for the sharks next year, they're going to be on a short leash.

Who the heck is Stalock?? A prospect?? C'mon.
Greiss is barely an NHL caliber player to this point. Sure he has had very limited action as Ironman Nabokov's back up, but he has been very pedestrian in anything I have watched.
Even Niittymaki is very unproven. He's only has one season as a winning keeper and has never played a season of even 55 games. I like him, but he really hasn't proven that he is a reliable-everyday kind of keeper.
San Jose took a step back in goal but needed to make the move to keep Marleau and Pavalski. I would have expected them to go harder after Ellis or Mason as I see them as the best availble other than Nabokov.
Stalock is a AHL rookie goaltender who just set the AHL record for most wins by a rookie with 39 he is argubaly the AHL's best goalie.39-19-2 record in only AHL season.4 shutouts.
Greiss is NHL caliber I watch every Sharks game he is a good goalie. He barely got any games because of Nabby.7-5 record. No shutouts.
Niitymaki won the Calder Cup as the starting goalie in the AHL.Led Finland to a Silver at the Olympics,Played in 2006 and 2010 Olympics,Also played in 200 world juniors.Won best goaltender at 2006 Olympics and MVP of the Olympics.Won Jack .A. Butterfly trophy as MVP of Calder Cup playoffs.83-79-28 record.5 shutouts.
These 3 are ''good'' not superstar goalies.

Posted - 07/01/2010 : 22:33:30 SJ was pretty open about the fact that they signed Nitty to be a starting goalie - I'm guessing they'll go with him for the majority of the starts unless he crumbles. |

Posted - 07/01/2010 : 16:54:33 To be perfectly honest I really don't like the Sharks goaltending situation. I really don't believe these are the goaltenders that will improve it. Can you say Marty Turco |

Posted - 07/01/2010 : 16:36:43 I think they will split Nitty and Greiss, 41 games each. They are both good enough to be starters pretty much. They signed Nitty because Stalock isnt ready for the NHL.They will have a young team this year with Petrecki,Joslin,Ferriero,Couture and Demers.
