Posted - 12/11/2010 : 12:43:18 Yesterday Linus Omark put the Oiler/Lightning game away in the shootout with a highlight reel worthy goal. In case you missed it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fhEIA_rl3g
The lightning players reacted as if they had somehow been disrespected:
Simon Gagne: "Nice move. But in the NHL, there is a line. You don’t want to cross it. I think that time? It was a little bit too much."
Mattias Ohlund: "If one of our young guys did that, the (veterans) would tell him jot (sic) to do it anymore. Was it disrespectful? Absolutely."
Martin St. Louis: "He's a young kid. Whatever he did, it worked. But, do we need that? I don't know. It's kinda a slap in the face a bit. Maybe it's a little too much."
I don't think it was disrespectful at all. I think it was a skilled player using his abilities to get the upper hand in the shootout, it worked, it was entertaining for the fans, and the lightning players are being sore losers.

Posted - 12/13/2010 : 23:48:35 Couldn't agree more with the "sour grapes" comments. Personally, i don't think the spin-o-rama could have done a whole lot since it was out at centre ice but perhaps it made the goalie think "what the heck is this kid gonna do when he actually gets close?". Maybe that's why he froze slightly on the fake shot? Dunno, but it looked good, it oozed confidence (from a rookie) and in the end he scored. The shootout is gimmicky to begin with so i don't see anything wrong with that move whatsoever! |

Posted - 12/13/2010 : 12:14:37 Interesting to see what is being made such a controversy in the NHL (more on TSN i guess) is completely one sided in this discussion. I completely agree with everyone though, this kid has sick moves (check out the flutter shot he scored on in a shoot out - Datsuyk eventually used it in the NHL) If my memory is correct, it was the TB Lightening who Ovy scored #50 on the other year and did his hot stick celey...Despite the fact I thought it was hilarious and fun to watch, I think Tampa Bay's whining was a little more warranted there. We need more Omark's in the league for sure |

Posted - 12/12/2010 : 23:09:58 I don't know what Fanomanal is but you are right, Ellis sucks. The Lightning will not even smell a cup until they address their defensive/goalie issues. Guessing Lecavalier's contract is a big part of that. Sorry, I know it's not on topic but they keep adding forwards and it's really annoying (or at least would be if I cared how good or bad the Lightning are.) Everybody else is right too, the goal might not have been that pretty but it was very entertaining. Almost made watching a shootout bearable. P.S. Simon Gagne can go ahead and shut up. Nobody cares what a guy who once scored 70+ points and has since just basically been injured thinks. Matt Walker and a 4th round pick eh? I'd say you've earned the right to bash people in the media. Its not how long you play in the league, it's how well. How's the groin dude? |

Posted - 12/12/2010 : 15:08:42 Very bizarre commentary from the Lightning players . . . sour grapes isn't the half of it. Childish, unsportsmanlike behaviour from the sore losers is more like it.
I mean, I can imagine some weird things being unsportsmanlike in the shootout - like skating in hard, stopping to spray the goalie, then shooting the puck while the goalie's eyes are closed. THAT might be considered unsportsmanlike, while within the rules . . . but this? Not even close.
It was a spin-o-rama to confuse/put off the goalie from the start, give him a different angle, and then a quick hesitation shot.
Welcome to the NHL kid.

Posted - 12/12/2010 : 10:45:38 I dont think the move was really the issue, I think it was more him trying it in his first game. i dunno, who cares? |

Posted - 12/12/2010 : 10:39:29 Yes, St. Louis was one of the guys who started the skating in backward move on the shoot out.
The spin more in the circle might have appears to be irrelevant, however I would think the goalie was thinking, "What the hell is this kid doing," as he watched that happening from centre ice. Really, the move for the goal was reasonably weak. Fake the shot and shoot quick. It's pretty common. So I would think the spin did put Smith off a bit.
And ultimately, it looked pretty cool! That's the point of the shoot out isn't it?? |

Posted - 12/12/2010 : 10:11:31 Dustin Penner remarked that Martin St. Louis skated in backwards on Marc-Andre Fleury in a shoot-out. If this is true, the Tampa players (the ones complaining) either have short or selective memories. I think this is much ado about nothing.
Jeez – even Grapes seemed lightly critical about the move, and here's a guy who loves to take shots at players being hotdogs, especially Europeans! |

That was actually a terrible move. WTF was the spinnerama for, he spun for no reason, faked a slapshot, and then shot it five hole. It was creative, but it definitely wasn't nice.
I don't care how it goes in, but it went in. None the less I love that spinnerama, It may have thrown off the goalie maybe not. If it had an effect or not I don't know, but it sure was awesome to see.
The morale of the story terrible moves are effective |

Posted - 12/11/2010 : 20:29:03 I suppose if Tampa feels that strongly about "showboating," the best thing to do would've been to make the save. |

Posted - 12/11/2010 : 18:27:39 I love it! If it annoys the other team it means it works as long as it doesn't annoy your team like Avery |

Posted - 12/11/2010 : 17:56:24 Tampa was just mad because they felt embarrassed. What else were they supposed to say? "Great game! We were beaten by a team we outshot 17-1 in the 3rd period, is last in the west, and a rookie used a spin deke to confuse our goalie, faked the shot, then scored."
Of course they feel disrespected! For me just a case of bad losers.
Nice move Omark!

Posted - 12/11/2010 : 17:42:53 I'm shocked that this was taken as disrespectful by some! Does this happen every time someone does something different? I'm sure the spin-o-rama move was "disrespectful" the first time...
Ridiculous. |

Posted - 12/11/2010 : 16:09:09 Hey it overshadowed a sic move by Eberle..... as far as I'm concerned the kids are alright!!! Maybe a little powder for the rash to make the lightening a little less sensitive? |

Posted - 12/11/2010 : 13:29:31 That in no way is disrespectful, Beans said it right "sour grapes" I think it was a clever play, I think it slightly distracted Smith" if thats who was in net. I must say that in the small part i saw of him ( I havent seen him play in an actual game as I havent watched the oil lately) it looked like he had great acceleration and speed. Nice move Linus!

Posted - 12/11/2010 : 13:25:14 the comments are ridiculous, I'm not sure where they come from - I can only imagine the bitter taste of losing a close game. The shootout is nothing but flashy moves and slick goals, its there to showcase the sort of moves that Omark made. I say more Omark-style goals, not less!

Posted - 12/11/2010 : 13:21:54 What?? Disrespectful??? Sounds like sour grapes to me. He's know for super creative moves in the shoot out. No one says the shoot out has to be a prototypical shot or deke??
It's not like Omark celebrated in the faces of the Lightning. He did the move, scored, and skated back to the bench with a smile.
It was a great move that totally fooled the goalie. The only thing Omark is guilty of a creative move that no one has every seen before. |
