Posted - 02/28/2011 : 17:46:55 Great pick-up by the Oilers, i love this C.Teubert kid, i think he will become one hell of an NHL defenseman from what i`ve seen of him.
2 huge pick-ups by Washington for a cup push. Wideman is a very, very good hockey player. Arnotts experience will be huge for Washington, even Ovie will look up to this guy.
Great, Vancouver now has Maxim LIP to go along with Burrows. That team just picked up an whole lot of hate from other rivals, this move may have caused more incentive for opposing teams to want to beat them even more.
Slozo, i would have agreed with you earlier in the season about Giggy, being picked up as an experienced backup, not anymore. His injuries are chronic, i would say he will never play again after this season. Giggy moves like a cement truck, you can have a time - out while he goes from post - to - post. His positioning and angle playing are still fine....but the guy just can`t move. |

Posted - 02/28/2011 : 17:29:33 As good a pickup as Penner is for the Kings, i think Edm got the better end of this deal. Teubert will be a 1-3 guy i'm guessing as well as another 1st round pick AND another pick? I guess that's what a team is willing to pay when they have an abundance of youngsters and picks / prospects to deal with AND are close to being a top contender?
I like the additions the Canucks made, especially the Lapierre one! This one certainly must have been done just for you Beans! They were talking about how well Lapierre performed for Montreal in the playoffs last season and the questions arose as to what exactly he did to piss off the Flyers (apparently they were choked at him for something he did). Well, here's where you fit in Beans, apparently he dove and drew a cheap penalty! Ah, just another guy for Beans to hate with the Orca sweater on! |

Posted - 02/28/2011 : 15:14:01 Rob Shremp is so insignificant it's not even funny. Any one who believes a player who has been in the minors for 2 years, then on waivers and picked up and then on waivers again in less than a year is going to amount to anything is dilusional.
Penner is going to suit the Kings fine. A line with Kopitar-Smyth-Penner would be difficult to handle physically and on the scoreboard. |

Higgens to the Nuck's Why the guy is a POWDER lover why u think he never fit in to the Flames system.. |

Posted - 02/28/2011 : 14:17:53 I am very impressed by the Wideman trade. some people think this is a joke, but the Washington Captials have produced nothing on the PP and minimally point wise on their blueline. I also think Atlanta will enjoy having Schremp on the team. I don't know a lot about what the players the Canucks got, but from what I heard it sounds like a 3rd pk unit.

Posted - 02/28/2011 : 12:49:10 I saw Lapierre play a lot during his junior days here with the PEI Rocket. Alain Vigneault was his coach in those days as well. |

Higgins to Vancouver is a bit of a surprise. Not sure why they would be looking for another Burrow/Samualsson type player.
We're always looking for those sorts of players - in case Burrows or Samuelsson get injured . I don't mind the pickup of Higgins, who knows if he'll gel with one of the lines. I don't see him getting higher than the 3rd line, but if he has some chemistry with Kesler anything could happen. He's a big winger that has shown he can score. VAN gave up Oberg, who was one of our brighter defense prospects coming into the year - but with the emergence of Tanev and Sweatt, he became expendible.
I really like the Lapierre pickup. I've only seen him a couple of times, after he got to ANA, but I saw enough to know that he's a bastard to have to play against. He'll make a great 4th line centre - and we gave up nothing depth-wise from the farm.
I think VAN made the right moves, and got the true 4th line centre/grit player that we needed. |

Posted - 02/28/2011 : 12:36:14 Canucks also picked up Maxim Lapierre. I didn't see Higgins going to Vancouver either, but i don't mind the move from a Canucks perspective.
Offensively, Higgins was a bust for the Rangers last season, but he's a great character guy. Speaking for his stint in NY, he gave the team 100% every night. He always put forth a strong effort, blocked shots, solid on the PK, etc. He's a guy capable of stepping up and providing a bit of offensive as well if need be. He was having a pretty good bounce back season in Florida, somewhere around 22 points in 46 games i think. |

Posted - 02/28/2011 : 12:26:04 Modin to Calgary, Higgins to Vancouver, Arnott to Washington.
Things are heating up coming to the end of the deadline.
Higgins to Vancouver is a bit of a surprise. Not sure why they would be looking for another Burrow/Samualsson type player. Calgary is hoping for some secondary scoring from Modin. Arnott is a great character guy for the playoffs and he still has some gas in the tank. |

Posted - 02/28/2011 : 12:20:21 I'm just going by what the guys on TSN & Sportsnet have been saying about him, which is why i said according to reports. Personally the only time i've ever seen Teubert plays as at the WJC, so i'm not that familar with him. |
Beans15 |
Posted - 02/28/2011 : 12:15:48 How is Teubert a 3rd pairing guy?? Didn't he lead the WHL in scoring for defensemen last year?? I think you are underselling his value. 13th overall pick is not by a fluke. Teams don't use 13th overall picks for average players.
Teubert has been one of the best defensemen in his age group in the past 3-4 years. Players do not win 2 golds and a silver in international competitions before the age of 20 when they are 3rd pairing guys.
Now, he may turn out to be that player, but his potential appears to be more like a #1-#3 defensemen. |
ryan93 |
Posted - 02/28/2011 : 12:09:02 As for Teubert, he's a decent defensive prospect, but i wouldn't call him as blue chip as there is. From the reports i've heard, he'll definitely be an NHL defensemen, but most likely a 2nd or 3rd pair guy. |

Posted - 02/28/2011 : 12:07:59 Richards staying put in Dallas...damn, that's the one i was waiting for all day. Was definitley hoping to see him dealt to the Rangers.
Looks like Jason Arnott may be on his way to Washington according to Bob McKenzie. |

Posted - 02/28/2011 : 11:41:03 first rounder-shmounder. EDM got Tuebert, which is about as blue-chip a defensive prospect as there are right now. |

Posted - 02/28/2011 : 11:38:24 Now we are talking! Penner to the Kings . . . real nice pick-up for LA, although I'd say they might have overpaid. Still, Penner will do better I think as a non-focal point of the offense and on a deeper team with more veteran players to kick his butt at times.
And Edmonton gets another first rounder, which as we all know will lead them to the promised land eventually.

Posted - 02/28/2011 : 11:34:15 Not bad for Penner. In a team full of top 6 forwards (at least potential of) Penner is expendable. Colton Toubert is a big kid at 6'4" and 200 lbs and is super young at just 20. He will get a chance to play every day minutes as early as next year. He has shown to be responsible defensively with an offensive up side.
Gotta cheer for LA to miss the playoffs so Edmonton can have 2 picks in the top 15!!
Like the deal. Like Penner alot when he feels like playing and I don't want to see him go but Edmonton got value for him so it's all good! |
nuxfan |
Posted - 02/28/2011 : 11:31:56 that is very good return for Penner - LA's first round this year is likely going to be mid-pack, and the other pick is conditional (likely tied to how far LA get in the playoffs), but Tuebert is a big prospect to pickup. |
ryan93 |
Posted - 02/28/2011 : 11:27:25 Dustin Penner to LA Colton Teubert, a 1st rounder, and another pick (possibly a 2nd or 3rd) going back to Edmonton
Nice haul by Edmonton! |

Posted - 02/28/2011 : 10:16:29 Yeah, it bolsters an already strong defence . . . again, I think this is a weird pick-up that adds to what they already have lots of. Still, I guess you can't have too many defencemen . . .
Scottie Upshall was having a career season offensively for Phoenix (16g, 11a) and should bolster the Jacket's goal scoring.
Pretty even deal I'd say, with not much impact either way.

Posted - 02/28/2011 : 09:51:37 To Phoenix: Rostislav Klesla
To CBJ: Scottie Upshall Sami Lepisto
I really like the Coyotes backend. It stars with Ilya Bryzgalov & Jason Labarbera in goal, and now with the addition of Rozsival & Klesla, they have a very deep defense corps...Yandle, Jovanovski, Klesla, Rozsival, Morris, Aucoin, Ekman-Larsson, Sauer, etc. |

Weird pick-up.
Might have something to do with Green's health, he's got some sort of "inner ear problem" that smells a lot like concussion-like symptoms... |

Posted - 02/28/2011 : 09:00:42 I am actually going to call this a bad deal for Washington.
They get good value for Wideman, sure; but he is the exact opposite of what they need. Wideman is an offensive guy with poor defence . . . and they already have plenty of offence from their D. He'll be under utilised, and will create issues for Washington defensively, I think.
I thought Washington would be going for a big defensive defenceman, or an experienced goalie as back-up who could step in and start (Giggy comes to mind) - not this.
Weird pick-up.

Posted - 02/28/2011 : 08:02:03 To Atlanta: Radek Dvorak 5th round pick
To Florida: Niclas Bergfors Patrick Rismiiller
Not a huge trade by any means, but i like this deal from a Florida perspective. Bergfors didn't work out as had hoped in Atlanta, but he still has some upside. Dvorak brings speed & experience to Atlanta. I was a big fan of Dvorak as a member of the Rangers Czechmates line with Nedved & Hlavac (31 goals in '01). |

Posted - 02/28/2011 : 07:54:58 First deal of the day: As first reported by Sportsnet Radio FAN 590's Nick Kypreos, the Florida Panthers have dealt forward Radek Dvorak to the Atlanta Thrashers for forwards Niclas Bergfors and Patrick Rissmiller.
Resignings: The Los Angeles Kings have signed forward Justin Williams to a four-year, $14.6 million contract.
The Atlanta Thrashers have re-upped defenceman Mark Stuart to a three-year, $5.1 million deal.
