@nuxfan. I've been done for about 4 days. We'd been waiting for Canucks man and Awesome to update this thing.

Other than that, we're done. You did see the post where I picked Dale Tallon, right?

C'mon Awesome One, get on with it!!!

CANUCKS RULE!!!

bump.

PE, we need some picks - we're so close!
polishexpress Posted - 03/31/2011 : 17:06:35
I was thinking along the lines of this: 2 for 2 trade, with 1F 1D on each side. If someone wants an upgrade in one area and is willing to sacrifice in another. (Ahem, Canucks man, Lidstrom would look nice on my team...)
Alex116 Posted - 03/31/2011 : 16:37:59
Don't see many trades happening, mostly because we didn't pick reserves. Most trades would prob be 2 for 1's and stuff like that but with no reserves, it'd be tough to do. To get Ovie, someone would have to give you someone you either could have had, or someone you overlooked, like Lemieux, who you won't be getting!
polishexpress Posted - 03/31/2011 : 15:10:39
With my final pick, I choose the guy who built the Hawks from the ground up, Dale Tallon. Just leave the salaries to an accountant, I don't want another firesale!

PS: if we are doing trades, I'm willing to field offers for anyone, if the price is right, even Ovie.

I'll round out my roster with Lindy Ruff.

The guy who built one of the most talented teams in the league: George McPhee

Bring back the Jets!

Well, he did somehow offload Gomez's brutal salary, even if he was responsible for it!

BUT, it's the whole, "in their prime" thing i'm going with. I certainly wouldn't want a 78 yr old coaching my team! Aside from being instrumental in the Oilers getting Gretzky, he drafted:
Coffey (round 1)
Kurri (round 4)
Moog (round 7)
Fuhr (round 1)
S. Smith (round 6)
He also got a very "Detroit-like" steal of a pick with King Henrik 205th overall in 2000!

However, getting Gomez's deal "off the books" in NY may be even more impressive than all of the draft picks!

Thanks ....i thought i'd snuck Fleury in the draft until someone pointed out that he'd only played preseason but i remembered Arbour had actually coached, albeit a little gimmicky? But i'll take it.

And, seeing as we're talking again about "in their prime", my GM will be Glen Sather.

And i guess i'm done!

Semin, just like when we were drafting players, you've picked a guy who's already taken in Ken Holland.

I'll let you go again before i pick....or you can have Burke

I'm assuming that DC get's Trotz and Toxxik has Holmgren? If i've followed correctly, it's my pick?

Ah, my pick is going to be a guy with a Cup ring for every finger (4 as a player and 4 more as a coach).

And with that, the California Golden Seals will welcome their new head coach , Hall of Fame member and 2nd all time winningest coach, 78 year old....

Al Arbour! (in his prime)

From wikipedia:
New York Islanders, 2007 - On November 3, 2007, Al Arbour returned, at the request of Islanders coach Ted Nolan, to coach his 1,500th game for the Islanders. Arbour said, "Ted is going to do most of the coaching, I think." At age 75, he became the oldest man ever to coach a National Hockey League game. The Islanders beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3–2, giving Arbour his 740th win. The 739 win banner was brought down, and replaced with one with the number 1500, representing the number of games coached. When the banner was lifted to the rafters, Arbour was joined by the entire Islanders team, his family, and Islander Alumni, including Mike Bossy, Bryan Trottier, and Pat LaFontaine.

Arbour is currently second in wins and games coached behind Scotty Bowman in NHL history. Many hockey publications rank Bowman as the best coach in hockey history and Arbour as number two. This ranking is not without controversy, however, and those who believe Arbour to be the best ever point to his work turning struggling teams into champions, while Bowman usually took over teams that were already championship contenders. Arbour's team won the final playoff matchup between the two coaches in 1993.

Seeing as I was the last guy to pick a defenseman, would it be okay if I swaped Regehr for Markov a la Nuxfan with Sakic and Toews?

I think picking coaches and GM's at this point is sorta useless anyway, not to mention, being that we're only taking 1 of each gives an advantage to the guys picking early

Regardless, i'll play along....

But i agree, Bowman shouldn't count.

Technically, Bowman has coached since the lockout, since he has worked as a special advisor for the Red Wings and in hockey operations for Chicago.

special advisor or hockey operations are not coaching or GM'ing. If you extend coach and/or GM to anyone associated with the team, its going to get hard to police - what great coach or GM from the past isn't associated in some way with teams these days?

I would think that the coach or GM must be a stated head coach or GM for a team since the lockout.
polishexpress Posted - 03/27/2011 : 13:47:05
Technically, Bowman has coached since the lockout, since he has worked as a special advisor for the Red Wings and in hockey operations for Chicago. I think that the Bowman pick should count, after all, we allow Lemieux to be viewed as "IN HIS PRIME." If we consider that Bowman is still actively involved in NHL team operations, then we could pull the "IN HIS PRIME" rule on Bowman, and say that if he was "IN HIS PRIME" he'd still be coaching..

That's my adamant defense for Canucks Man, because I want to keep my choice of Mike Babcock.

Oh well, I'll take the best coach in recent years, winning the Stanley Cup, never missing the playoffs, and coaching Canada to a gold medal, Mike Babcock.

PS: IMHO, I think that Bowman is a valid pick though he hasn't coached in the lockout. Though Bowman retired from coaching in 2002, he still works in NHL management, and for me, that counts as being a valid choice for a coach, despite this being a post-lockout draft.

Bowman doen't count, only guys who have COACHED or been a GM since the lockout.
