Just watching the Rangers-Penguins game, and Matt Cooke was just given a 5-minute major and game misconduct for elbowing McDonagh in the head.

It was an obvious high elbow by Cooke, and it would be hard to believe that Cooke was not targeting his head.

What is it with some players? (No need to answer this question. It's rhetorical, and lack of respect is the main answer.)

The Rangers by the way, scored twice on the ensuing power play (after the Penguins tallied a shorthanded goal), which became a 5-on-3 for two minutes.

The game was tied 1-1 at the time, at about the midway point of the 3rd period, so the penalty came at a key point in the game. The Rangers went on to win 5-2, with two goals late in the 3rd period. It looks like Ryan McDonough is okay, because he finished the game for the Rangers.

Cooke cost his team the game, two points the team could have used. I wonder how his teammates feel? I wonder what his coach thinks of him taking a such a stupid selfish
penalty? And I wonder what Mario Lemieux thinks?

And lastly, how many games will Cooke be suspended? Dan Blysma should make him sit
out a game or two beyond whatever the league gives Cookes as a suspension. Tortorella
did this with Avery a few games ago. Avery took a few bad penalties one game, and the
next game (vs. The Habs), the Rangers sat Avery, and won 6-3 without him.

Good for the NHL! The culture of hockey is changing (probably too slow for most people), and separate and apart from the length of Matt Cooke's suspension, it's great to see the support from Pittsburgh's GM, Ray Shero:

Here's the quote: "The suspension is warranted because that's exactly the kind of hit we're trying to get out of the game. Head shots have no place in hockey. We've told Matt in no uncertain terms that this kind of action on the ice is unacceptable and cannot happen. Head shots must be dealt with severely, and the Pittsburgh Penguins support the NHL in sending this very strong message."

verdict in - rest of the season (10 games), and first round of the playoffs. Finally, message sent, better late than never I suppose.

Wow, i'm impressed! I thought 10 games would have been just fine but have absolutely no prob with the extra "1st round" games too!

Maybe they've finally got it right and will continue to come down hard on repeat offenders!

As a pens fan who watches cooke all the time, I have consistently defended his occasional stupid antics due to what he brings to the table. Underrated defensively and when his head is not up his a** he can actually be a solid contributor on any team in the league. With that said, his antics are getting old and i think the league & Lemieux in this instance need to start giving guys like him ultimatums. These guys need to realize it is a privledge to play in the nhl not their right; like civilians that want to keep their license they must obay the rules or go find themselves another job or league to play in.

I also believe the league should implement a rule similar to the nfl for hits to the head. For Ex Cooke should get 10 games without pay, plus a 50,00 - 100,000 dollar fine as a repeat offender. I don't care if your Heatley, Cooke or Gillies if you cant control your emotions or keep your head in check throughout the course of a game, then maybe you deserve some time off to clear your head. See how much the players appreciate the league smiling at them while they siphon money out of their accounts under the name "douche bag charges"

I believe he will get suspended the remainder of the regular season by the league (8 - 10games) & don't forsee any major consquences from the organization for no other reason then our lineup is depleted enough.

He's an effective player if he isn't dishing out dirty hits, which is a terrible shame. I used to be a big Matt Cooke fan, but quite frankly this guy has to learn his lesson. I wouldn't be opposed to keeping him out for the remainder of the season.

Thinking ahead, what does Lemieux do with Cooke? He has another 2 years on his contract with PIT at 1.8M cap hit - but if he keeps up with this, does Lemieux still want him on the team? And if not, are there any takers for him?

Him and Subban seem to be neck and neck these days for most hated player in the league as voted by their peers...

If you haven't seen it before, or if you forgot about it, Cooke got his in a bout with Evander Kane last hockey season: http://www.hockeyfights.com/fights/94177

To answer you question:

Quite simply, yes. He is stupid.

He'll definitley be suspended, but i have no idea for how many games. His history/reputation will definitely come into play. Pierre McGuire's prediction was 8 games.

It was an obvoius headshot, and thankfully McDonagh wasn't injured on the play. He's been great since being called up in early January (still can't believe the Habs parted with him in the Gomez trade, but that's another story).

I saw that too Guest. It was pretty blatant. I don't think the tip of his elbow made contact but it sure looked like he was trying. Regardless, his upper arm hit him in the jaw. Ugly. I think he'll get a good suspension due to his history, but becuase McDonagh wasnt injured on the play it won't be massive.

I used to defend Cooke because I saw him more as an agitator than a dirty player, but in the last couple years his play has gotten pretty ugly.

Yes, I am wondering if Lemieux/Bylsma will have Cooke sit a little longer afterward. At this time with Cooke's history if they keep him in the line up you have to think that his mission statement is not coming from him alone, but rather from the top. Which is pretty contradictory to what Lemieux preaches in the public eye.
