Hi gang,

We're looking for another volunteer moderator for our forums. We are specifically looking for someone out East who can drop by the forums first thing in the morning (the earlier the better) and do a quick check to ensure there is no spam postings (and remove any if there is) Our preferred candidate is at least 20 years of age, lives in Eastern Canada, and has a nice even personality. Strong HOCKEY opinions are fine, but the ability to think objectively and be considerate to others is most important. While the job is volunteer and casual, it needs to be taken seriously and is a commitment of at least 20 minutes a day (most days of the week, when available)

Of course you will need to be familiar with the PickupHockey.com code of conduct found at: http://www.pickuphockey.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2160

If you think you're a good match for the job please fire me an email at admin (at) pickuphockey.com

Thanks to all who apply!

Cheers!

As a member of the computer science / web development community, preventative measures will only work up to a certain point...

How about to start a topic (or even to reply to a topic) the poster has one additional step -typing a word that appears as an image.

Any spammer worm etc will not be able to do that and it adds a couple seconds to each post at most which I feel would be worth it to save everyone some hassle. (Of course that doesn't prevent human typed spam...)

There is an example at the very bottom of the page where you can post.

My 2 cents.

lol Slozo. Just like Alex 116 I also didn't notice that this is a thread from early in the year. Overall our mods do a good job and do so on a volunteer basis. It is understanable if they aren't always able to get here first thing in the morning. I had just assumed a moderator hadn't yet been chosen. Sorry Slozo.

Did you hear about the retired proctologist? He spent 40 years saying "what's a place like this doing in a girl like you?"
Alex116 Posted - 11/17/2009 : 19:38:44
I'm assuming the spammers would just attack an already started post, like this one? That might actually be even worse!
JOSHUACANADA Posted - 11/17/2009 : 16:44:07
Why dont you simply not allow a Guest to start a topic or add an attachment. If they sign in to an account have lower post ranking approved attachments and/or topic creation. I doubt a 100 post member would become a spammer. Food for thought.

umteman - I am the east coast moderator. Have been for some time now.

And I daily zap spams between 7am - 9am EST, depending on how busy work is when I get in.

It's been very, very busy, and I only got to zapping those 30 odd spams at 9:20am this morning. I have a job in real life that pays, btw.

I probably erase more spam than any of the other moderators, mostly because I am the east coast guy - and that's fine, that's what I signed up for, and I don't mind it. But sometimes, there happens to be a prolific spammer, and sometimes, that's the day that I don't get online, or at least not very early . . . it doesn't happen very often, but it happens.

Deal with it, dude.

ok, we really need that east coast moderator to be selected now. I got on shortly after 8:00 this morning to find 30 active topics - most of which were the same piece of spam posted 20 times in the general hockey chat forum..

Errrrrrr, i mean, did she bring some hockey knowledge?

I'm also still here every once in awhile lol, anyone know what ever happened to Mikhailova, pretty much the only girl who ever posted on here?

Also glad to see some things haven't changed, such as the Willus and Beans argument of Gretzky vs. Orr!

...Orr for the win though! Aha!

When the going gets tough....the tough get going!

Welcome back Paintrain. I wondered where you had gone.
Beans15 Posted - 11/13/2009 : 13:31:17
Depends what you are looking for. The younger Crowd (30 and under) is normally down Whyte Ave there are TONS of pubs down that way. If a pure sports pub is more your fancy, either the Shark Club or Schank's on the West End. I'm sure there are a few places at West Ed to watch the game from as well.

Unfortunately, there really isn't anything near Rexall, so if you are going to try to get the scalper tix and strike out(very unlikely) or decide the price is too high, it's quite a ways to get to a pub.

You can get reasonable seats for $100 each. $150-$200 each will get you in the lower bowl.
MSC Posted - 11/13/2009 : 13:26:35
I'm from Yellowknife don't forget, cheap is all relative. Any pub recomendations?
Beans15 Posted - 11/13/2009 : 12:44:44
Best way?? Scalpers outside of the LRT entrance. Always there, always tickets from rink side to nose bleeds.

Cheapest??? Armed Robbery of scalpers outside of the LRT station. Won't cost you a dime!!

Seriously, the scalpers aren't too bad. Might be for a Saturday night game against Chicago though. Look online for different ticket outlets, ebay, that kind of thing. The team also releases standingroom and singles day of if you want to risk it.

Honestly, I wouldn't pay to go see a game at Rexall. I get free tickets from time to time and that's about all I go there for. The stadium isn't great. I would suggest you go down Whyte Ave and find a pub to watch the game in. You will have more fun and it will be way cheaper.

I'm sure we will see the Viagra stuff gone in the next few days. But, apparently there have been changes to the formula and it's not longer bad for your eyes???

Edmonton huh Beans? I just happen to be heading south next weekend and was curious if you could give some advice on the best/cheapest way to get tickets to the Oilers/Hawks game?

Ah, the clown has added 2 more since i posted! And, i see that they only just joined on Tuesday and have 30 posts? Have the others been removed? If so, ban that jackass!
Alex116 Posted - 11/13/2009 : 00:47:29
Slozo, didn't realize at first this was an old topic. Then i saw you asking for salary and realized it! Still can't believe it's a non paid position!

As for moderators, are there any way out west here? Cuz i seem to be one of the later guys on here and there's always spam popping up. Like tonight, with 4 consecutive Viagra posts telling us how "Viagra is not harmful to your vision"? I mean, what's this all about? Someone has to post about that? I know it doesn't mess with your eyes, i see fine!

Anyway, i guess this stuff gets wiped out in the morning anyway? Oh, and by no means was i volunteering or recommending myself. It's not something i'm worthy of at this point. I've only been here for a few months and have prob been lectured more than most of you who've been around for years! Sorry, sometimes i can't resist a wisecrack.

One question to the moderators though....this clown (oops, personal attack....see, i'm not worthy) who just put up the 4 Viagra posts has 28 posts to their name? Now, have they put all 28 up tonight and i'm only seeing 4? When i click on their name, only 4 non archived posts come up? What i'm getting at is, have they posted 24 other times in the past with reasonable stuff just to come up with this 4 Viagra post blast? Could they not have been booted out long ago???

Just curious....

Ha ha . . . hilarious, longest time to respond ever, Paintrain - and, thanks.

It's been fun so far . . . I have pushed the boundaries of moderator at times, but the site has really grown nicely through this period with more intelligent posters, and many good discussions have been had. And you've missed some epic battles between Beans and I, although lately we've agreed more than disagreed.

Welcome back, btw.

Good to see you on the MOD team Slozo. You're going to have fun with the spam being out east. When I was up at 7 mountain time there would be a dozen spam topics at times. Just remember you're not alone though, us other Mods are here to help too.

Welcome aboard Slozo. The help is welcome. The damn spammers have kept us so busy lately that Willus and I have barely had a chance to banter about our favorite players, who just happened to be the 2 best player ever*.

Anything I can do to help, let me know.

*Perhaps 2 of the top 5 players, depending who you talk to!

Well after receiving more applicants than we could ever have imagined, and having a very long debate we have selected our newest moderator for the PickupHockey.com Boards.

We'd like to officially announce SLOZO as our newest moderator team member.

Slozo will be joining Willus, Beans and Leigh in ensuring the boards are kept in good order. Please do your best to make his job an easy one by revisiting the forum guidelines: http://www.pickuphockey.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2160

Thanks to all of you who offered to volunteer for the position!

Sincerely,
Admin

I'd seriously consider it, and I am up very early every day during the week . . . but . . . not sure if I could commit solidly to 20 minutes every day. Hmm.

Newfoundland would be awesome! But anywhere east of Manitoba would be great. The idea is that they are up earlier than us out West and therefore could check the boards earlier.
