It seems that the Oilers will be getting a cheerleading squad at their games in the near futures.
According to the article, there are already 23 teams (though none of the Canadian teams) that have cheerleaders at games. (I think that speaks to the fact that cheerleading "culture" is far more prevalent in the United States than in Canada - especially in regards to Football and Basketball)
I'm curious what people's thoughts are about having cheerleaders at a hockey game ?

Won't they be chilly dancing in skirts and short shirts on the ice !! I mean I guess they could wear pants and a sweater, but then what would be the point of cheerleaders?
honestly though I don't see a poblem with em! They can maybe pump up a game haha? They will def bring in more fans !! |

I don't like it. I hate how "Americanized" the game is getting. There have never been cheer leaders at hockey until a couple years ago, and why should there be? Hockey is hockey, not football or basketball. People in Canada go to a game to watch hockey, not blondes. Sure it makes sense in Phoenix or Carolina where no one gives a damn about hockey, but bringing it north of the border doesn't make sense at all. Nobody is going to a hockey game to see the cheerleaders here. Makes no sense why they should bring them. |

Well, i certainly won't be buying any extra tix to see games just cuz there's cheerleaders. However, i will admit that i'd prob watch them more than a mascot running around as entertainment??? |

There is a famous saying, but I'll blank out the first word just in it is against forum rules(though the use of the word in context is not at all offensive) : "S## SELLS"
The cheerleaders are nothing more than that. Next time you watch TV, count how many commercials have or allude to provocatively dressed women and/or steroidal men, in comparison to how many commercials don't. Bet the numbers for provocatively dressed women will be high, especially during sports games.
All the Oilers are doing is giving fans a better experience than they would watching commercials. |

Being Canadian I go to hockey games to watch hockey this will only be a minor distraction for most hockey fans. I agree this will be better than watching a mascot though..... I'm still a boy!! |

They're hot and nice to look at. Plus it makes a nice picture to put on facebook with you and 5 cheerleaders.
Nothing wrong with that. I know traditionnaly there's no cheerleader in a hockey game, but now there is... whatever. I'll still look at the play when the time is running down. |

I didn't realize that the Oil were having problems selling tickets to their games...aren't they already sold out every night? If so, what additional income do they think cheerleaders will bring them, to offset the expense of hiring an additional 8-12 people? |

I am totally against this, and this is deeply saddening. What a gimmicky thing to do, how typically american.
Someone said that you'd sort of accept/understand this in a very non-traditional market (Anaheim, Florida, Carolina), but it just doesn't belong here in Canada.
Mascots are about getting the crowd pumped, and to increase support/cheering. Cheerleaders, unlike their name, are there for one thing only:
titillation!
And yes, that is a viable English word!

I think Beans would look great trottin around the old coloseum in a Oil cheerleaders outfit. Perhaps if they put one of the hot cheerleaders behind the visitors net Taylor Hall will actually be able to score. Actually in all seriousness, there is some great cheerleading talent up in the Fort that would be great for the Oil games |

Up until now it's been great that there were no cheerleaders in Canada, but now the "American" way is slowly creeping into our country. Doesn't make much sense to me but c'est la vie I guess.
On the other hand I guess if the Oilers are playing REALLY bad they could dress a couple of them in between periods to maybe help distract their opponent with some eye candy |

I think it's pretty hoaky. I don't understand how a cheerleader fits into the NHL at all. I get the ice cleaners between whistles being a little bit of eye candy (both male and female so all tastes are available) but where does a cheerleader fit?? It's not like football where there are sidelines or lacrosse/basketball where the cheerleaders can go onto the court during timeouts. There just isn't any room in hockey for it.
Edmonton has done an amazing job in marketing this hockey team in the past 10 years. Anyone in Alberta can attest to that. It went from the Oilers being Edmonton's team to a clear effort to make Edmonton a team for all of Northern Alberta. Their pre-game show is solid and they get a ton of players into the community all the time. It really is a marketing machine so it does not surprise me that they are going to be the first to have cheerleaders and I think that the stuff they will be doing off the ice is fine (visiting hospitals, going to other Oiler events, etc) however cheerleaders have no place anywhere near the actual game.
Not a fan. |

Let me guess... all the guys opposed to this are probably over 40 years old? Everybody that doesn't care is probably a bit younger and are used to seeing changes in sports. I myself am in my 30's and can understand both sides of the argument. But in all reality this does nothing to change the game on the ice... so who cares? |

Hey Folks, let's keep this on topic and reasonably clean. Your age and your like or dislike of Cheerleaders overall is not what should be discussed.
Please stay on topic. |

I think there are a few things to consider
Competitive cheerleading has become extremely popular in Edmonton over the last few years and it is quite possibly more popular in Edmonton then any other city in Canada.
Cheerleaders don't get paid anything for their services. Sure they get some sweet hook-ups and expenses paid, but seriously they are essentially free marketing tools for the Edmonton Oilers. They are required to attend many Oilers community events in addition to the games and posing for a calendar which the Oilers will make money off of.
However, I don't see them being extremely skilled or amazing to watch. Whereas football cheerleaders have lots of skills, these girls won't. In relating to hockey I think it would work better if they were excellent skaters and provided some sort of entertainment on the ice. I think they'll end up being more like Edmonton Oilers promoters rather than cheerleaders. Which i think is a decent use for them.
Ultimately I understand why Edmonton wants to bring them in, but I don't think they will add anything to the hockey atmosphere. |

Good idea, really good idea, great idea, awesome idea, amazing idea.
So the guy walks into the bar with a dog and starts to watch the oilers game. They score and the dog does a flip in the air. The bartender says "That was cool, what does he do when they win?" to which the guy replies "I don't know, I've only had him for 15 years." |

So, so far as I can tell, everyone that supports the use of cheerleaders at Oilers games wants to see pretty girls in short skirts/tight ourfits as a sort of visually pleasurable experience. Eye-candy, if you will.
Personally, I find it a very weak argument, as it essentially says that the product on the ice isn't strong enough to keep the viewer's attention. Yes, they would be on between play, I get it . . . but still, I think i demeans the game, and takes away from its purity.
I think the same thing about any cheerleaders, btw . . . for me, it demeans me, as a fan, that I have to be told when to cheer, how to cheer, and be told how enthusiastic to be.

Why is it every time I find Beans and Slozo agreeing on something, I get this vision of Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau.
Demeaning? Hokey? Typically American? Takes away from the purity of the game?
This is the same game where two freaks of nature can square off and repeatedly bash each other in the face legally, with naught but a 'penalty'?
This is the same game where 80 percent of the participating team ARE american teams?
I watch professional hockey for entertainment, it doesn't and shouldn't have any other bearing on day to day life than that. If cheerleaders enhance the entertainment factor, why would that ever be a negative thing? I go to a junior game here and I have to put up with adults in dog suits. I think cheerleaders can only be an improvement.
If you want purity of the game, go watch kids on an outdoor rink, playing for the fun and love of playing the game. Trying to maintain purity fo the game, while making a multi-billion dollar industry out of it, just seems to be counter-productive from a business stance. |

They should not be too busy
What do they have to cheer for?
Unless they are there to support the opposing team |

Fat Elvis: I think you may have lost 90% of the readers here with that reference, but I will take Walter Mathau in this case Beans and I would be an odd couple indeed!
Fair points all around, actually . . . you almost have me convinced.
Then I thought of all the concession staff being playmate/bunny types in short skirts and halter tops; there being a specific "babe camera" to search out the hottest female in the crowd to be shown frequently on the jumbotron; and optional [choose large-chested celebrity of the day]beer cup holders.
I feel it's a slippery slope, and we've already skied halfway down the hill.

I agree Slozo, and I think that if it wasn't already so prevalent in our society, I maybe could find it unneccesary as well, but one meal at Hooters or Moxies, 10 minutes of TV, any afternoon of shopping with my wife and seeing what fashion is nowadays, and I seem to forget all that!!!
Bring on the eye candy!!!
Hey does anyone know if the cheerleaders will be in place for Nov 5th game against the Wings? Probably my only game I'll get up to Edmonton for this winter and it would sure be nice to rile up Mrs. Fat Elvis by letting her know there's cheering gals there! |

Slozo is so right on his point that the on ice product is not good enough to keep the viewer's attention.
After all, it is the Oilers!

What's wrong with cheerleaders?
With all the guys that go to hockey games, it might be better for the business.
I was in LA not too long ago. Their snowbunnies are more enjoyable to watch than our Vancouver snowbunnies. I would not complain if we had cheerleaders. |
